Default Trying out for the National Anthem tommorrow at invesco, need your ears (critique)

Yup, always been a dream of mine to do it at a Broncos game. Finally getting to try tomorrow. Open auditions....SO

Here's a really low quality video (ha, sorry) of how I think I'm going to sing it.

Their criteria: Traditional. thats about it, or so they told me in the email.
I'm going to get to sing a small portion of it in front of the judges, and if you make the final cut you get to sing on the fifty with FULL SOUND. WHOOPTY WHOOP.

Anywho, figured you guys could give me your opinions, less vibrato, no scooping into notes, etc etc.

Cheers and THANKS

Coming here for advice never works out well. Maybe you should go shack up with a single mom from S. Carolina!

Seriously good luck. I sang it as part of a 12 person choir at the Oakland stadium before an A's game, it's pretty damn cool.

Yes a little rushed. Sounds good though. One suggestion is to perhaps slow down and thicken your vibrato a bit it sounded a tad quick and thin.

Good luck brother.

That's pretty good, you should do well if your nerves don't kick in around crunch time.

Good luck I hope you make it.

Sounds great! Seriously, good job. I hear maybe 2 notes, and they were right around each other. (perilous fight, I believe.) Nothing that can't be worked out. You've got good tone and a good voice. Good luck!

I dont know if this will help or not, but find a baseline kind of volume and try to hit that volume with all of your notes in a particular section. This is done with your breathing and diaphragm technique...I noticed that you stopped breathing in some spots, which makes it harder to maintain a volume. I liked the volume increase on the last section.

You have a good voice. Nice, not overbearing but still professional sounding. You would make a solid country singer (I hope you take that as a compliment). Well done and good luck.

Your breathing needs a little work. You are breathing with your upper lungs instead of from your diaphragm. Easy to tell because your phrases tend to fall off in volume at the end due to lack of air, and your vibrato is not supported. Also, your shoulders raise vertically about two inches with every breath, and that is not the correct way to breathe. Try standing with your back braced against a wall, and breathe by pulling air down into your lungs by pushing your stomach out rather than raising your chest up. It takes some time to get used to it and have it become natural, but once you can do it your singing will improve. Your head and neck are wobbling all over the place which only hurts vocal production. Remember where your vocal chords are and keep your head and neck loose but relatively immobile. Trying to help. You have a pleasant sound that can become great.

I was prepared to chuckle but I think it sounded very good. My only suggestion would be to work on the rhythym. I thought it sounded like you hurried some parts and went slower on others. Maybe some practice with a metronome?

I like your tone. Very smooth. Nice emotion in the song too. Here are some of my suggestions (I've been classically trained in voice for 8 years):

Use your gut to reach the higher notes, not your mouth/throat. Suck it in and get your 'push' from there. When you start using your upper chest and throat to hit them, you strain your vocal chords. Doing this with your gut will also help your volume control. Your higher notes should not increase in volume.

Another thing I noticed was you tend to dig down for your lower notes. Listen to it again and pick out the notes that are lower. You want to HIT the note, not slide into it. The way to do this is keep a high placement throughout the entire song, so you are not digging sharply to hit the lower notes.

All in all, good job and I agree with the country singer comment (in a good way). Very pleasant, professional voice, and I think you will do fine.

Best of luck!

I think if you do it topless you have a good chance.

Well, didn't even make it past the first round

BUT, I really appreciate all of the help guys... At some point a few years back I started that horrible habit of singing from the lungs, but I definitely worked on pushing from the diaphragm today. That helped me with the sustained breaths, and gave me the fuller sound on both my lower notes and vibrato. REALLY GOOD SUGGESTIONS, and I thank you all.

The tryout was pretty cool, invesco was as badass as ever. They had booths set up, with two judges at each. We'd go up one at a time, and sing from "and the rockets red glare" on.

Frustrating for me...I nailed all of my notes, breathing was great, and the vibrato was full. Rushed it a LITTLE, but I don't know what they didn't like. I swayed a little bit (i kind of get into it when I start singing, and move a little), but think one of the things that might of killed me were the people around me. About six feet away on either side, was a woman (extremely hot btw) that was incredibly flat (and ended up making it to the next round haha), and a quintet on the other side that was absolutely BLASTING out their rendition. So, maybe they didn't hear MY voice as much as I would've liked? Or maybe I just didn't sound that great lol.

Anywho, no excuses, didn't make it, bummer. BUT, I'm not easily discouraged, and am a firm believer that the more you try things like this, the more chances you have at succeding. So, thanks again for the tips everybody (they really did help, I haven't had a voice coach pounding in the good habits for a LONG time), but I won't be busting out at a Broncos game THIS year.

Cheers and rock on fellow maners.

And p.s., I LOVE singing country, so that's encouraging hearing from you guys that my voice sounds countryesque.
