Angry relatives of 9/11 victims last night clashed with supporters of a planned mosque near Ground Zero at a raucous community-board hearing in Manhattan.
After four hours of public debate, members of Community Board 1 finally voted 29-1 in support of the project. Nine members abstained, arguing that they wanted to table the issue and vote at a later date. The board has no official say over whether the estimated $100 million mosque and community center gets built. But the panel's support, or lack of it, is considered important in influencing public opinion. Holding up photos of loved ones killed in the Twin Towers and carrying signs such as, "Honor 3,000, 9/11 -- No mosque!" opponents of the proposed Cordoba House on Park Place called the plan an insult to the terror-attack victims. "That is a burial ground," said retired FDNY Deputy Chief Al Santora, referring to the fact that victims' remains were scattered for blocks. Santora's 23-year-old son, Christopher, was the youngest firefighter to die that day. "I do have a problem with having a mosque on top of the site where [terrorists] can gloat about what they did," said Santora, with his wife, Maureen, by his side. About 150 people attended the emotional Greenwich Street meeting, were some shouted down others as they took their turns. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the head of the Cordoba Institute, which is in charge of the project, insisted that the site would help "bridge the great divide" between Muslims and the rest of America. "We are Americans, we are Muslim Americans," Rauf said. "Many of us were born in the United States. We have no higher aspirations than to bring up our children in peace and harmony in this country." But the crowd got ugly when he added, "Freedom of assembly is the right of all Americans." Amid boos, one woman shouted, "Not at the World Trade Center!" Rauf's wife, Daisy Khan, followed him to the microphone to pitched the planned community facility as "much needed party space and much needed venue space" for the area. She was roundly booed. Some audience members preached tolerance for the Muslim leaders. Before the meeting, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, a supporter of the mosque, stood in front of the site and said, "What we're rejecting here is outright bigotry and hatred." Catholic priest Kevin Madigan, of St. Peter's Church, which is about a block away, agreed. "I think they need to establish a place such as this for people of goodwill from mainline Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths so we can come together to talk," Madigan said. That would piss me off. Even if they are completely unrelated, the underlying implications are just ****ed. Bad Tendency Doctrine should put an end to this... Because we all know how it will end.

I don't care if a mosque is around ground zero. A mosque is not a meeting ground for evil. Now if they want to build an alqaeda flight school an terrorist training center I would have a problem.

This is a bad idea. In their attempt to show they don't blame Islam they're going to make the Mosque a point of anger and resentment from it's inception. A good example of a well-meaning idea making the problem worse IMO.

Muslim Americans died in 9/11 too. 9/11 was not an act representative of Islam no more than Oklahoma City was an act representative of Christianity. Just because extremist terrorists said it, doesn't mean it is.

Someone had the idea of putting a buffalo farm there to show how "wild and free" we are. Always liked this idea.

Yeah, let's build a National Socialist Party Museum on the site of Auschwitz while we're at it. Or a US Calvary Museum at Wounded Knee. This is divisive and unnecessary. Is it constitutionally protected? Probably. Is it tactless, insensitive, and lacking in vision? You bet. Those who demand that Americans maintain civility, political correctness, and cultural/religious sensitivity toward our Muslim brothers ought to follow their own advice with regard to New Yorkers specifically, and Americans generally.

I know this is going to upset a lot of you who think there should be different rules for "them" and "us," but there's still a freedom of religion in this country. For all of us. That means putting a mosque wherever the hell they want to put it, assuming the ground is available. Frankly, I find this entire discussion utterly retarded. Also, I read somewhere that this is 3-4 blocks away from Ground Zero, so at some point we're going to have to ask the question "Where is far away enough?" It's not 4 blocks... how about 4 miles? Is 4 miles too close? 40 miles? 400 miles? Or should we do what some of these folks seem to want and tell them that they're not allowed to have a religious mosque anywhere on our soil?

Ground zero was destroyed in the name of Allah. Granted the murderers certainly weren't your average run of the mill muslim but it was done for religious reasons.

I dont think they have a problem with a mosque being built. I think they have a problem with where they want to build it. If it bothers the WTC victims families to have a mosque built within a 2-4 block radius of ground zero, move it somewhere else. The building also being called a "party place" is immensely offensive. It would be like the Japanese buying Pearl Harbor and putting up a "Dec 7, 1941 theme park ride" where the Arizona sits now. ![]() |

Most people can be very ashamed of themselves for generalizing about all Muslims based on the doings of few. I can hardly imagine how it would be if all British people were compared to Tracey Connelly and Steven Barker (baby killers) wherever they'd go, can you?
If I remember my history correctly, then the first recorded disputes between Christians and Muslims with the bloody crusades between 1095 and 1291, where Catholics slaughtered millions of Muslims in the name of their God. I'm neither Christian nor Muslim and neither American nor from a Mid-Eastern country, but I reckon that a majority people from both cultures were taught by their mothers that it doesn't matter who starts a fight, but who's mature enough to end it. Americans are taking a very mature step by not denying Muslims of building a community center, just because it's close to ground zero. |
