Default Broncos weakness: QB

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest

By Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson

After trading up to use a first-round pick on Tim Tebow, the Broncos now have four interesting players at quarterback. But at least for the short term, they really donít have one guy who can take this team to where it wants to go in 2010. They apparently felt the same way and decided to select Tebow, but without getting into all of his strengths and weaknesses -- which have been beaten to death -- letís just agree that it is safe to say Tebow is not NFL-ready right now. Personally, I have strong doubts that he ever will be, but that is a post for another day.

Over the offseason, Denver acquired another former first-round pick, Brady Quinn, via trade. I commended the move at the time and still have no problem with it, as the price they paid to acquire Quinn was minimal. If brought along slowly, Quinn could develop into an upper-tier second-string quarterback. If this ends up being the case, this deal will be well worth it for the Broncos. But Quinn has done nothing at the NFL level to make you assume that he is a quality starter -- especially in the near future.

The name that is often overlooked when discussing the Broncosí quarterback situation is Tom Brandstater. The second-year QB doesnít have nearly the college pedigree of Tebow or Quinn, but he has tools to work with and with Josh McDanielsí history for developing quarterbacks, Brandstater looks like a fine developmental guy. Who knows what you might have down the road? But for now, he probably is the guy on the outside looking in and once again, lends nothing to the belief that he is ready for action immediately.

Kyle Orton, the incumbent starter, put up fine numbers in his first year in a Broncos uniform. His 62.1 percent completion percentage and the 3,800-plus yards passing were respectable, but I contend that is Ortonís ceiling, especially with Brandon Marshall now in Miami. The veteran just does not have top NFL tools. His arm is very average and his physical makeup and athleticism are below par. He is conservative almost to a fault and everything in the offense was short and low-risk throws. As the season wore on, defenses quickly caught on that Orton was not going to -- or maybe was unable to -- threaten them deep downfield or deep outside the numbers. He cannot stick the tight throw, which is imperative at this level for quarterback success. Orton also offers little once the play breaks down. In short, defending Orton is too easy for his opponent, as more defenders can creep closer to the line of scrimmage and defenders also will be more apt to bite on the receiverís first move

QB is a huge weakness until someone proves it otherwise time will tell. I think Denver has huge weakness at DE NT MLB RB as well.

Well that is pretty obvious. Even this coach is trying hard to replace Orton. Now we get to wait and see if his replacement is the answer or if we get a new coach in the next couple years. It is pretty funny how people here defend his play and then claim to know something about football. Orton is not a good NFL QB. McDaniels will not last very long at this job if he doesn't find much better QB play. This offseason proves that he knows this.

Orton was always going to be just a stopgap until they could land the QBOTF. Now that we got a couple canidates for QBOTF it will be interesting to see how long before they move Orton.

I still don't see how they can keep 4 QB's on the roster.

Look at where many QBs fell in the draft. If we selected any of the QBs left after the Rams pick, would he feel we got better? We have seen very few QBs moves/trades from Washington and Philadelphia. Only one of those QBs would have made us better. I think you can write this article for many teams that dont have a top 10 QB at the helm. Writers just wanna hate.

Nose tackle? We bring back our servicable starter from last year and add a former all-pro, and its a weakness?

Williamson has talked **** for more years than I care to remember about this team and that will never change.

Orton is good. He's just not great. Defending that against rags full of baby batter, like yourself who say he sucks only, displays football knowledge. Now people that say he is great I agree, but I haven't really seen that here.

Sure, he played just good enough to show he needs replaced.

I don't know what the deal is, but you've been kind of a douche lately....I actually used to enjoy most of your posts too.

Not that you care, and no it's not an Orton/Anti-Orton thing.

I'm looking at longterm answers so imo Denver needs a young great NT and a young DE. The guys we signed are great for 1 to 2 yrs but, no longer.

Orton is average, at best. What in the world are you people looking at when you claim he is good.. above average.. a solid QB? I don't get it.

I wonder when people on here will stop saying McD only has a few years. Isn't it as obvious as all heck that Bowlen is support this guy trying to build this team the right way. That doesn't happen in a few years. He's obviously trying to develop some young guns at QB and it seems they might be another year away, we shall see. No way do I see McD leaving Denver in less then 5 more seasons, unless he stinks it up to the point where we're talking 4 win seasons back to back or something, which will never happen. He's here for a good while so relax and enjoy the ride.

Perhaps you should ask Stink the same question......

Said Schlereth: "To me there's not a whole lot of controversy. Kyle Orton has been a very good, very accomplished quarterback in this league for a long time. The problem with Kyle Orton is he's limited athletically. He's got a great arm, but he seems to get an ankle injury or whatever because he doesn't have the athletic ability to get away."
