I was with one of those temp agencies and had many temp assignments.

Got a call one about a Fortune 500 company interviewing, started about 3 days later.

Researched the companies in my field and in my area. Found the job listings/descriptions on their company website. Searched that company on Linkedin.com. Found people at that company that I may be linked to through my contacts. Got introduced to them through mutual contacts and got interviews that way.

Applying through Monster and those other sites is a lot more difficult than finding someone you can contact directly at the company to inquire about open positions. Even if you are not hired it is a great way to network and have options for the future.

Good friend of mine got hired at AT&T (we'd previously worked together at US Cellular), and told me how much better the pay/job in general was. I applied and about 2 weeks later got a call for an interview. Got hired day after my interview and haven't looked back since. Working at AT&T for 2 1/2 years so far. It's got ups and downs.

Manager I worked with at 2 other places put the resume I submitted in the pile. HR gave it to the Supervisor at the time she put it in interview pile without knowing our connection and I had to do the rest. The time before that he brought me with.

Contacts help but you have to be able to close the deal.

I got tired of working for people and decided to open my own shop. Best and worst idea I have ever had.

I re-connected with an old friend on Facebook and in the process of talking about what we were doing now, I jokingly asked if they had any openings where he worked since it was similar to what I had done. He told me to keep an eye on the State of Colorado website and so I did. Submitted the app, and finally got the job months later.

Put in for 3 openings within the org when I graduated. Interviewed with one department, and was offered a job by one of the other departments after that without ever interviewing. It was weird.

Actually that was my first job with this department. My current job I saw the internal announcement, applied, interviewed and got the job.

Man, it would take forever to talk about my work history and how I got each job. I'll just say this, don't be afraid to call a potential employer and tell them of your interest. I've done that time after time, get the feedback regarding what they are looking for and then get the training or experience they need. Gives u the perfect opportunity to go back to them a few weeks/months later and show that you are committed to gaining employment with them. I have more than doubled my income since 2005 doing just that. Take the crap jobs, bust ass and never burn a bridge. In my line of work, they will go back to my military days and ask for references. That's 12 years back, and fortunately Ive always left pretty good impressions, especially my supervisors. Never know when I will need their favor!

Seeing their trucks around. Looked them up on the internets and filled out an app. 3 weeks later, I'm on a plane to Seattle for orientation.

I found two of my last three on Craigslist. The current job I have I was recommended for by a former coworker.
