Default Santa Clara 49ers?

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—If ever there’s another landmark play like The Catch, which marked the beginning of an era of excellence for the San Francisco 49ers, it may not be in the city that hosted that and many other storied NFL moments.

Voters in Santa Clara—about 45 miles south of San Francisco—will decide on June 8 whether to lease property to the team adjacent to California’s Great America theme park to build a $937 million stadium to replace Candlestick Park.

Except for financing for the project, a yes vote would appear to all but guarantee the 49ers will move from the city where Joe Montana and Jerry Rice(notes) helped rewrite NFL record books.

The team has expressed its desire to relocate to the site, spent about a million dollars in support of the proposal known as Measure J and received the backing of the NFL.

“We’ve been fully focused on Santa Clara,” said Lisa Lang, the team’s vice president of communications and government relations. “This is our best chance of keeping the team in the Bay Area.”

Candlestick is so archaic, the coordinators and assistants up in the booth can't take an elevator directly to the field/locker room level. They take an elevator down to the main concourse and are given a police escort down the aisles of the field level seats where they enter the field at the bottom.

Who cares. Santa Clara is 10x as safe as Hunter's Point. SF could have done some great things for a stadium like they did with the Giants and didn't step up to the plate.

After having lived right down the street from Great America, which is also the home to the 49ers HQ and practice facility, this is not that big of deal for any place other than San Jose as it actually puts them on the map. Bout time for a city which is the 11th largest in the country yet a relatively unknown place for most. Word is going round that the A's might be moving to Fremont which is about 10 minutes from where the new 49ers stadium will be.

All great stuff going on for the San Jose area.

Even weirder... 9ers have informally talked with Raiders to both play in the new Santa Clara stadium. I really don't wanna drive to Santa Clara... I'd have to cross the dang Golden Gate, drive through San Francisco, get on Hwy 280, cut off to the airport & go south on Hwy 101. At least we'd sell out when we played the 9ers...

But its not the San Francisco Raiders (which is just ass piratey funny) and the SF 49ers. If they have one stadium, are both teams going to switch to Bay Area Raiders and Bay Area 49ers?

Won't happen, unless Spanos wants to sell the team to Ed Roski.

Which means there is no chance of Chargers going to LA. Roski's not building LA Stadium for fun, he wants to own a team along with the stadium.

I voted YES on a stadium initiative for the 49ers.... that was like 1995 or something.

They're not going to become the "Santa Clara" 49ers, from what I understand. I suppose 49ers and Raider fans would hate sharing a stadium but from a financial point of view, it makes perfect sense, especially since they both need new stadiums badly.

The Chargers have their own stadium proposal going to the city council soon. If it passes, then the voters are next.

If all three California teams are playing in new stadiums relatively soon, that would be awesome. And Roski can watch his land rot.

It makes no sense. The raiders should be playing in a pig sty covered with crack bottles, not a stadium.

That Ed Roski stadium deal isn't a done deal yet. His project has made it further than any other one, but there are other projects in the works. Last one I heard about was building a stadium in Downtown, right by Staples Center and LA Live. The plan would be to tear down a wing of the convention center and there would be enough room. That's a much better idea than building a stadium out in Industry.

Court documents in the McCourt divorce case revealed that Frank McCourt also has aspirations to build a football stadium right next to Dodger Stadium on the Chavez Ravine site.
