Default Aussie girl, 16, completes solo trip around world

16-year old girl lives her dream...

The mind boggles at what this girl accomplished. Just 16, Jessica Watson sailed non stop around the planet -- more than 40,000 miles -- in a tiny pink boat.

After 7 months of being alone at sea, she just sailed into Sydney harbor and was greeted by 400,000 Aussies, who turned out to welcome her home.

If you have a son or daughter who vegetates in front of the boob tube -- eating junk food -- maybe this young girl can inspire them to aim higher.

What a story!

Here's another short video about Jessica's arrival in Sydney harbor.

Was this covered on US news? I would guess not.

What a sweetie! Just 16.

I wonder if she's been kissed.

While it's a great accomplishment, I have a hard time celebrating this girl like she's the end all be all of teeny bopper stardom. What's next, a 13 year old boy from the US decides he can do it better?

I also don't have much respect for her parents. Call me old fashioned but no way I'd let me daughter do that, not if I love her. Sorry, this barks of ignorant parenting and no, I didn't watch the link...

Tomb,

Her older brother also sailed around the world -- though not non stop.

Maybe you have not heard -- Aussies have no fear of the sea. They are sea lovers.

Would have been interesting if this was 1810.

Yes it was covered, I saw it on HLN News while eating breakfast the other morning. Props to her, that is a huge accomplishment. Shame on the parents, 16 is way to young. Had something gone wrong they would have gotten lynched by the Aussie public.

(this is only to piss off miss I for the record...)

I'm not impressed by this. Now if she could parallel park a car than that would be news.

This is only a great thing when it is successful. I recall the young kid who flew across the US with his instructor and I think the plane crashed and they died. I'm not an advocate of this stuff.

I think that it's awesome...good for her. I have a 17 and 15 year old and if one of them was driven to attempt something like this and they were qualified, I'd be supporting the effort.

It's a great achievement and should be applauded.

Being a 16 yo girl makes it all the more remarkable.

Not sure what the Australian laws are on child predators but I would assume at the high seas she's game though...

an amazing accomplishment for anyone, let alone such a young girl... but her boat is 34', which is fairly substantial.

This chick did it at age 18 in a 26' boat with little to no sailing experience under her belt, and wrote an amazing book about the experience.

I learned about this story from my neighbor, who is a sailor himself. In fact, Ed and his wife Bernie had a similar dream. They sailed around the world in a 41-foot sailboat. But it took them years - with many stops and lots of sight seeing.

To do it in a solo non stop run is almost unthinkable.

On his trip Ed survived major storms at sea -- with gigantic 50-foot waves -- and all the conditions that will kill even a seasoned sailor.

He is fully aware of the dangers - and is awed by this young woman's achievement. The posters who don't see this for what it is are clueless.

Jessica Watson is right up there with Amelia Earhart.

I don't think she was left to sail without any kind of support.
i'm sure her boat was equipped with the latest in navigation-satellite technology.
She was being watched if you will.

Jessica had an Internet link and stayed in touch via email.

If you look at the boat -- she had several photovoltaic cells for power.

Jessica had a competitor. Another woman also attempting a solo non stop run. But the other woman had a problem with her navigational equipment and had to stop in Cape Town, S Africa.
