Our troops are facing multiple deployments and experiencing psychological stress due to prolonged exposure to combat," said Brig. Gen. Loree Sutton, director of the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury.

The Army, which has 138,000 soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, had 10,222 mental health hospitalizations last year. They accounted for almost 19% of all Army hospitalizations.

Ten percent of Marine hospitalizations were for mental health reasons, while they were about 8% for the Navy and 7% for the Air Force.

I'm in school getting my degree in Social Work. For our class final we had to do a group presentation on a local agency that hires social workers, and my group chose the VA. It is really sad, all of the soldiers we met and talked to about the war as well as the clinicians and staff at the VA hospital. The mental health department, which we focused on, was a bit better than the physical hospital, but it was still heartbreaking. We were told that these current wars have the highest percentage and total cases of PTSD of any war, including Vietnam. (I know the term PTSD is fairly new, but before that it was shell shock and battle fatigue). We have put a lot of stress on them. I am firmly on the side of "bring our troops home now".

I had a similar experience, but it was listening to The Who's Quadraphenia on one of those new (at the time) quad systems. Felt like my head was being taken apart like a jigsaw puzzle.
