Default Brian Cushing suspended four games

Brian Cushing suspended four games

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 7, 2010 6:41 PM ET

The reigning NFL defensive rookie of the year will miss the first four weeks of the 2010 season.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that Texans linebacker Brian Cushing is being suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on steroids and related substances.

Per Schefter, Cushing appealed the suspension during the scouting combine in February but was told today that he will be suspended. He can participate in training camp and the preseason but will have to sit out Weeks 1-4 of the regular season.

It's the second time in the last five years that the reigning defensive rookie of the year has been suspended for performance-enhancing drugs; Shawne Merriman won the award in 2005 and was suspended in 2006. Although Merriman was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 2006 season, a rule passed in response to Merriman's Pro Bowl selection prohibits players suspended during the regular season from being selected to the Pro Bowl.

So Cushing, who was selected to the Pro Bowl after 2009, won't be a Pro Bowler next season.

Cushing started all 16 games for the Texans after being chosen in the first round of the 2009 draft. Prior to the draft Cushing was the subject of a false report that he had tested positive for steroids at the 2009 scouting combine.

Looks like those pre-draft roid rumors last year must have had some truth to them.

Cushing has kind of a Romo personality. No big surprise here.

Watch him blow his knee out and sail off into irrelevance like Merriman

Hey Socalorado, your boyfriend is a cheater. Of course, it's to be expected, he did go to USC. BTW, Beanie Wells and Laurinaitis looked pretty solid last year.

Cushing tested with an elevated HCG.

Remember Manny (Dodgers) last year.

In the world of performance enhancing drugs, hCG is increasingly used in combination with various anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) cycles. As a result, hCG is included in some sports' illegal drug lists.

When AAS are put into a male body, the body's natural negative-feedback loops cause the body to shut down its own production of testosterone via shutdown of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPGA). This causes testicular atrophy, among other things. hCG is commonly used during and after steroid cycles to maintain and restore testicular size as well as normal testosterone production.

High levels of AASs, that mimic the body's natural testosterone, trigger the hypothalamus to shut down its production of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. Without GnRH, the pituitary gland stops releasing luteinizing hormone (LH). LH normally travels from the pituitary via the blood stream to the testes, where it triggers the production and release of testosterone. Without LH, the testes shut down their production of testosterone. In males, hCG helps restore and maintain testosterone production in the testes by mimicking LH and triggering the production and release of testosterone.

If hCG is used for too long and in too high a dose, the resulting rise in natural testosterone will eventually inhibit its own production via negative feedback on the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.

I'm glad this came out before the NCAA made its decision on sanctioning USC.

Whats crazy is Cushing was popped for the estrogen enhancer back in September. But the appeal process in the NFL is crazy weird. They didn't hear the appeal until February, when the season ended. They then just ruled on that hearing this May. Adam Schefter was talking about it today on Mike and Mike.

Adam_Schefter: More hCG: it is in seminal fluid and slightly elevated levels can be discovered in the event that a test occurs soon after ejaculation.

Um, so the only way hCG can be elevated is if he just dropped a load before the piss man came? Hope there is nothing going on in the Hoothston Texthans lockerroom. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

You know that its not just when teams are in the locker room for games or practice right. They can call you at random and tell you to report for a test. So in theory he could have been at home doing the deed either with a lady or himself or another dude and had to go pee. You only have a certain amount of time to report for the test.

Cushing's test was positive for elevated levels of hCG, the source familiar with the case told Schefter. The level that he tested positive for was so low that it would not have been considered a positive test even a year ago.
hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a banned substance that is widely used to stimulate the body's testosterone production after an athlete uses anabolic steroids.
If a player has a medical need for it he can request a therapeutic use exemption, but if he had an exemption, Cushing wouldn't have been suspended.
One person familiar with testing procedures told Schefter that hCG is contained in seminal fluid and that slightly elevated levels can be discovered in the event that a test occurs soon after ejaculation.
U.S. Anti-Doping Agency spokeswoman Erin Hannan denied that.
"You would not see a natural spike of hCG after a workout or ejaculation," Hannan told The Associated Press. "You would only detect it in urine by actually having taken it."
