Default Do we roll with 4 QB's this year?

I was as suprised and upset (initially) as anyone about the Tebow draft pick. I remain skeptical about Tebow's ability to develop into the elite NFL QB that is almost a pre-requisite to postseason success. That said, I have warmed up to the pick because I think he will contribute immediately in a wildcat variant -- especially on short yardage and goal-to-go situations. In fact, I think he will be devastatingly effective in this role. We were quite possibly the worst team in the entire league from the goal-to-go distance, although I don't have the data to prove this. Having a weapon like Tebow in this setting has the potiental to pay huge dividends right away.

If in 2010 Tebow is going to be used primarily as a short-yardage specialist while he develops behind Orton / Quinn, how to we adress the following:

1. The actual depth chart listing -- is Tebow going to be listed as the second string QB over Quinn (or Orton)? Someone is going to be the emergency quarterback... and obviously that guy isn't going to be the sub-package specialist. Then what happens if the actual starter goes down with an injury? Does the rookie take over while Quinn (or Orton) sits with a clipboard?

2. Tom Brandstatter -- obviously, the organization does not see a long-term relationship with either Orton or Quinn... and one or both will eventually be leaving. Do we keep all four this year, or is Brandstatter already on his way out? I'd like to see what we have with Brandstatter and a year of development... and I'd really hate to see him cut loose this year knowing Orton or Quinn are soon to follow.

I wonder if we might keep all four this year. What do you think?

I agree with this.

I think normally, there's no way that a team uses four (or even three) roster spots on QBs.

But as you described, Tebow brings much more to the table right away than just being a third-string quarterback. In light of that, I definitely see them keeping three of them active: Orton as the starter, Quinn as the backup, and Tebow as the Wild Horse/short yardage specialist (exactly as you describe).

Plus, I doubt McDaniels is giving up on Brandstater yet. The third-string emergency QB doesn't count as a roster spot, right? Because that's where I can see Tommy B. spending another year.

Or is that emergency 3rd QB rule invalidated if we have three active QBs suiting up every Sunday? That's the only way I see us dropping Brandstater. (or trying to stash him on the practice squad)

I don't know what the rule is. Can you dress four quarterbacks? If not, and you wanted accomplish the above... you would almost have to list Tebow as something besides a quarterback this year.

I don't think we roll with 4, you need your roster spots and I just don't see any way we can justify spending the 53rd spot on a guy who will never see the field or dress on game day.

If we genuinely like all 4 then I wouldn't be surprised to see one of them get injured in camp and go to IR (Quinn or Brandstater) and if we are not super high on Brandstater we will attempt to PS him.

That's my guess. Hope they're able to slide him through, because it seems likely Orton will be gone after this coming season, and it would be nice to have a guy who's been in the system for a few years to replace his roster spot.

Gotta love the IR stash manuver. Wouldn't be at all suprised to see this happen. But this leaves the problem of having to designate either Quinn or Orton as the emergency QB, if we are going to use Tebow as a specialist. So what happens if Orton goes down with an injury?

My suspicion is that brandstater goes to the practice squad.

What's there to understand? He's a big quarterback with a decent arm, and the team has a year's worth of development invested in him. Outside of that, we know nothing about him.

I believe so.

He didn't make the active roster for a single game last year (was the emergency 3rd string QB for all 16), which is what I think disqualifies you from the PS.

So he's still an eligible squad candidate. If we don't think somebody will snatch him up, I'd say that's actually his most likely destination.

Tebow makes the 53 man roster, we will see him in some game time action this year, probably not much, but some....UNless he balls out...

quinn and orton also are the Qbs.

brandstater is either PS or cut. I think ps..

Tebow will never make it through waivers to the PS. So he is guaranteed active roster. Same with quinn. Kyle starts this year and his last year here. Unless he balls out or quinn/tebow surpasses him.

I think season starts out like:

orton
quinn
timmay

Then mid season

Orton
tebow (so he can play in some games), as we know if the 3rd qb goes into a game the starter can no longer play. So tebow is listed some games as the 2 for wild horse and such
Quinn

Next year

Quinn
tebow
Orton is released, traded or moves to backup.

IMO

We're going to have 3 QBs and 1 playing the revolutionary new Concrete Cyanide position.

I know the general rule of the emergency quarterback. I just don't know if you can dress 4, and declare the fourth QB as the emergency QB.

The concern I have is that Tebow would have to take over for Orton in the event of an injury, if we were to use him as previously described.

When the rule was instituted 1991

Why it was instituted Largely because of the happenings in the notorious “body bag game” between Washington and Philadelphia in 1990. Redskins quarterbacks Jeff Rutledge and Stan Humphries were forced to the sideline after hits by the Eagles. Without a third quarterback dressed for the game, Washington was forced to use Brian Mitchell, its all-purpose star, at quarterback in the fourth quarter in the Eagles’ 28-14 victory.

Notable usage of the rule In 1999, Jets Coach Bill Parcells was introduced to it in the season opener against New England. When Vinny Testaverde torn an Achilles’ tendon in the second quarter, Parcells was in a bind: his preferred choice to replace Testaverde was Rick Mirer, the team’s backup quarterback. But Parcells had designated Mirer as the third quarterback for the game, listing the punter/quarterback Tom Tupa as the backup instead. N.F.L. rules state:
If the third quarterback initially enters the game during the first three periods, the club’s other two quarterbacks become ineligible to participate and may not return at any time under any circumstances.
Because Parcells did not want to lose his punter, Tupa played quarterback for the rest of the first half and the third quarter before giving way to Mirer. Tupa, who threw 12 touchdown passes with 25 interceptions as a part-time quarterback in his N.F.L. career, actually threw a touchdown pass on his first play from scrimmage, but the Jets still lost, 30-28.

Other features of the third quarterback rule:

1) The two quarterbacks on the 45-player active list must be bona fide quarterbacks: a club is not permitted to designate as one of its two quarterbacks a player whose primary position is not quarterback.

2) It is not necessary that the club’s first two quarterbacks be injured in order for the third quarterback to participate; his participation is purely a coaching decision. Likewise, if the third quarterback initially enters the game during the fourth period or an overtime period, the permissible return of either of the club’s other two quarterbacks is purely a coaching decision.

3) Under no circumstances can the third quarterback participate in the game at the same time as either of the club’s other two quarterbacks.

Yes, I don't get it either. I've seen tons of people asking and it seems like common knowledge to any hardcore football fan. Yes Brandstater is eligible for the practice squad and yes that's probably where he'll be placed.

This will be Ortons last year with us most likely as Tebow will be primed to take over IMO.

My gut says Orton is gone. Either we trade him or he get's out. He has just found out that he is not a long term answer here. I also would not be surprised to see Timmy listed as a tightend or Rb.

Lining up Timmy on the 10 yard line as RB could be a deadly weapon. I kinda like that Idea.

We'll see. You can bet nobody is getting put on any PS or getting cut until deep into camp or even into the preseason games. These guys are going to do battle and Brandstater will get his chance to outshine either Quinn or Orton. We know for sure Tebow isn't going anywhere. Orton is totally a stop gap. We've yet to see what Quinn can do. I think Quinn was signed not knowing we would land Tebow. Now that Tebow is here, and we used a 1st on him, I don't think Quinn is being viewed as the next leader at QB. It's going to be very interesting to say the least.
