Default Jets released G Alan Faneca

by Joel Thorman

The Jets are planning to release guard Alan Faneca on Monday, according to a report.

Faneca, 33, was reported to be on the trading block for weeks, but the Jets couldn’t find any takers. He was scheduled to make $7.5 million this season, of which $5.25 million is guaranteed.

That trade chatter gained some momentum when the Jets spent a second round pick on offensive lineman Vladimir Ducasse.

The move also comes just two seasons after Faneca signed a five-year, $40 million contract with the Jets. He spent his entire career prior to that with the Steelers.

I know we just drafted Bealtes and Walton for the interior of the line, but I would like to see this guy take up Hamilton or Hochstein's spot for a year or 2 until one of these guys is ready. Clady, Faneca, Olsen, Kuper, and Harris would be fantastic next year!

I'd love to see us pick up Faneca and Morrison (assuming the Raiders release him and nobody else trades for him). Two vets for depth at positions of need.

Edit: never mind on Morrison, he got traded...

They officially released him. He would be worth a year or two next to Clady.

Yeah, it's official. Change the title ! I think we should bring him in to compete.

Faneca refused to take a pay cut
Posted by Mike Florio on April 24, 2010 1:09 PM ET
As it turns out, guard Alan Faneca could have stayed with the Jets, if he'd simply been willing to reduce his salary of $7.5 million.

Per a league source, Faneca refused. And so he's gone.

The tampering rules notwithstanding, Faneca's agent presumably gauged the market to see if Faneca could get a better deal elsewhere. If so, look for Faneca to land with a new team soon.
