Default Too Fat to Fight!

U.S. Troops Too Fat to Fight?

by Stew Smith

An article written by the Associated Press describing the overweight soldiers in our military (titled "Are U.S. Troops Too Fat to Fight?"), discusses the overweight trends of the active duty and reserve military, but also the recruits who are too heavy to enter into the military. The military community has always been a cross section of society -- good or bad. These days, as our country increases in size, it is only a matter of time before the military shares the traits of obesity and associated illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and some forms of cancer to name a few.

A shocking 20 percent of all male recruits and 40 percent of female recruits are too heavy to enter into the military ranks. Basically, the new recruits have to lose weight so they can barely pass the minimum standards in both the height/weight measurements as well as the physical fitness tests. See the PFT standards for all military branches.

OK. But not all those people are recruits in the first place. I know alot of people in the 1195th reserve unit that just got back and none of them are fat.

I understand Stew's point, just trying to understand yours. Not everybody at Mickey D's is a recruit in the first place. Yes, the USA as a whole is overweight and so are most people who eat regularly in fast food places.

It's not so much the active duty guys that is the concern but future recruits.

It's not just the crap we allow in our foods. It's our genes. We have a gene that tells our body to take any excess sugars and store them as fat. We've carried this gene for millenia. It helped us survive. Now, it just makes us fat. In tests on mice, this gene was removed and all the little mice could eat whatever they wanted and never get fat. We just have to re-engineer our genes.

My brother had a hard time with weight when he joined the Marines. when he graduated bootcamp though he was down to 151 pounds. He's 5'9, and went in around 210. We did not even recognize him.

My dad actually would gain weight while home and lose a ton of weight while on float.

The US obesity issue is trending downwards while other first world nations are starting to rapidly increase. We're just the trend-setters.

This is the next step in America's culture of vanity.

The rich will all be skinny and beautiful and the poor will continue to be fat and hideous.

HG Wells was a prophet.

How much do you think it will cost to have your baby's fat gene removed in the womb?

I am guessing it will be much easier to do it then than to fully-grown humans.

No way. In the perfection of the free market all things will be made available to all people, at a reasonable price. Volume marketing blesses all. We'll be able to re-engineer ourselves and our offspring. We will find, and remove, the "death genes" and live for hundreds of years. We will all be beautiful, thin and rich. All will be perfection.

Surely you are joking.

The best cosmetic surgery is only financially viable for the rich. When some company figures out how to remove the fat gene the first market they will tap will be actors, models and athletes.

The question then is what will happen to nose tackles, plus-size models and fat funny guys in Hollywood.

We won't need big nose tackles, cos the offensive linemen will be small too.

Well I am sure at some point being thin and beautiful will become a right, too. Then our Imperial Congress can pass legislation so that happens.

I was so borderline when I joined, my stomach was quivering from sucking it in while they were doing the tape test. I got my mark exactly, I went through, I lost the better part of 10% body fat while in training and it was never an issue.

Once I left the real army though, those issues arose again. Similar problems are happening in deployments right now where things like PT are often ignored because you're already working 12+ hour days, who wants to get together and force longer days on someone? Also, with shiftwork being commonplace, it's too hard to do. Combine that with the all you can eat D-Facs they run over there and it's very, very easy to pack on the lbs.

Too fat to fight though? Not a chance. You'll naturally be conditioned to do whatever your job entails. If you're in a physical job, the exercise inherent in doing that job every day will keep you at a reasonable physical condition to continue said job.

There are 2 issues, right? One - recruits - if it's just concerning recruits then *maybe* we should look at a special 'fat camp' for those prior to bootcamp. Two - active duty - I've tried nothin and I'm all out of ideas.

Why would a rich person need to be skinny? They can afford to be fat.
