A mid round prospect that I am really intrigued by is Clifton Geathers, DE, South Carolina.
Dude is 6'7 1/2 and 299 pounds. His uncle 'Jumpy' Geathers played with the Broncos for a year, among other teams. His Dad was drafted but never played in the NFL and his brother Robert plays for the Bengals. He has incredibly long arms at 37 3/4" and his hands measure 11 1/8". Good run defender and has the size and strength to be a stud five-technique defensive end in the 3-4 defense. He declared early and is inconsistent and raw....should have probably stayed in school and developed his game to fit his first round size and ability. Geathers is projected to go in the 4th or 5th round, but I could see him selected a little earlier, as a team is bound to be smitten with him. I could also see teams being wary of his inconsistency and character issues. In all reality, Geathers could come off the board anywhere from the end of the 3rd round through the 6th round. I would love to see Denver draft him in the 4th round. Last edited by SouthStndJunkie; 04-10-2010 at 01:36 AM.. |

Orange Mane Mock Draft:
6-19(188) - Pittsburgh (ExpatFan) - Clifton Geathers, DE, South Carolina ![]() The defensive linemen I've been picking for the Steelers in the mock draft are also good fits for the Broncos D -- large, thick-bodied defensive ends who can set the edge and stop the run. It's hard to emphasize just how freakish Clifton Geather's measurables are -- 6 feet, eight inches tall, 299 pounds, with almost a 38-inch arm span. He also has a 33 inch vertical, ran a sub-5.0 40, and put up more than 20 reps on the bench press, in spite of those freakish arms. I honestly don't think there's anyone in the NFL with the frame that he has -- he's like a much longer Mario Williams or Jevon Kearse, I guess. The downside? Almost no production in college, and a few off-field incidents. But, if you subscribe to Parcell's "planet theory" of drafting, you've got to start looking at this guy from the 4th round onward. |

Looks like we are on the same page in regards to Geathers.

I hope we walk out of this draft with Clifton Geathers. 6-7 and 299 pounds. He had a decent 40 time for a big guy. 4.96 in the 40. Also has a pretty impressive vertical for his size. 36 inches. Big ass hands too. 11 1/8 That is the type of size that takes away passing lanes.

What exactly are his off field concerns? I keep seeing allusions to them but never hear what the problem is.

Arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and public drunkenness Aug. 23 outside of a local nightclub. Sustained a cracked right orbital bone the night he was arrested. Was suspended for the first game of the season after arrest.

Clifton needs to get his uncle to teach him the forklift.
I remember reading that Jumpy would teach the move for $20,000.00 |

So it's all one drunken incident. Not something to be terrified of at least.

Another guy to keep a eye on is Corey Peters. I'm pretty sure the Pats, Pitt, and Jets all worked him out. He is 6-3, 300 pounds. He ran a 4.90 40 at his pro day. He never has lived up to his ability though.

He had 41 tackles, 8.5 TFL, and 3.5 sacks in 2009, so it's not like he did not make any plays at all. I am big on production on the field as one of my factors when I rank players....but we are not talking about a 1st round prospect....and his unique size/potential is worth the investment of a 4th or 5th round pick. |

Fifth-round or later. Interesting measurables, but not enough OTFP and discipline as a person to consider being taken higher, especially with the depth in this class.

I already weighed in on this one with DB4Life. Geathers has bloodlines and size. Unfortunately, he does not play football very well. IF the kid showed any talent to this point I think developmental prospect would be nice. The thing is he only started 9 games in 3 years at SC. He lacks any functional football skills, has no heart on the field, and he simply was nothing more than his triangle numbers. Mentally he lacks any instincts and fails to read his keys all too often.
In short, the kid is a great athlete with little ability to apply his athleticism to the football field. IMHO, he is not even worth a UDFA contract to waste your time. |

That being said -- this kid's frame + triangle numbers + bloodlines are worth a roll of the dice in the later rounds IMO. Remember, you can't win the lottery if you don't play.... ![]() |

Check out this video of Geathers from nfl.com -- watching him do the vertical jump and the braod jump is pretty amazing:
