Buckhalter ready to go
By Lindsay H. Jones The Denver Post Posted: 04/04/2010 01:00:00 AM MDT Just when Correll Buckhalter's body finally was starting to feel right, starting to feel recovered from the rigors of an NFL season, it was time to start training again. But such is the life of a 31-year-old running back whose body doesn't recover as quickly as it once did. "Some weeks you feel better, then the next week you feel bad," Buckhalter said. "So it takes about three or four months, especially for an older guy, to get back to 100 percent." Buckhalter said he still deals with some lingering effects of the right ankle sprain he suffered in December, but it isn't enough to keep him away from the Broncos' voluntary workout program. Buckhalter's backfield mate, Knowshon Moreno, should be feeling much fresher. That's the beauty of having 22-year-old legs. Moreno, the team's first draft pick in 2009, led the Broncos with 947 yards rushing in 2009. But Moreno didn't have a 100-yard game, and he averaged fewer than 3 yards per carry in three of the Broncos' final four games. "At some point in the season, he kind of hit a wall," Buckhalter said, adding that Moreno will benefit from an entire offseason with the Broncos. Moreno missed most of training camp last year because he held out, then suffered a knee injury. The Broncos will start 2010 with a new plan for the running game and a new running backs coach, Eric Studesville, who replaces longtime assistant coach Bobby Turner. The Broncos also will be revamping their run-blocking scheme with the departure of former line coach Rick Dennison. "We had some very, very solid runs, some games where we had great production between (Moreno) and Buck," coach Josh McDaniels said last month at the NFL owners meetings. "Obviously we have high expectations for Knowshon in his second year, but I don't think that's anything that he doesn't feel himself." http://www.denverpost.com/premium/broncos/ci_14816213 |

Yes, Moreno did hit a wall, running into the backs of his blockers.

It is disturbing to me that he is still feeling the effects of an ankle sprain from December in April. After setting career highs for carries and yardage, I really wonder how much he has in the tank. I think there were several games where Moreno was forced to play hurt because Buckhalter could not go and I think that contributed to Moreno never being able to get fully healthy. I expect us to draft a RB in the first four rounds and would not at all be surprised to see Buckhalter released at some point. Probably when he gets injured again.

If we are able to address some needs with players / picks for Marshall, I don't think the meltdown for a guy like Spiller would be that bad. Our draft strategy really depends, to a large extent, on Marshall. Ah, who am I kidding, no matter who we pick there will be a meltdown!
It's the OM way! |

![]() They just better have their strategy(ies) mapped out if Marshall is moved during the draft. I don't want it to come out again a few months later that the team was caught with its pants down at draft time. |

I would think the Marshll trade would have to go down before the draft since whoever picks him will want to get a long-term deal in place. Don't think it will be before the 15th though - after the tender offer period expires. |

Buckhalter will always have injury issues. He has done ever since he came into this league and that isn't going to change here.

Glad to have him, but from game to game... he can't be depended upon. I actually wouldn't be upset if we took a RB in the middle rounds. The modern NFL is RBC, and we're going to need a counter-punch to use with Moreno going forward. With Buck's injury history, it's not a bad idea to think about a multi-talented back-up/tandem RB type. Maybe someone that can get in the mix returning kicks, etc... a speed-guy. |

Moreno hasn't had a healthy NFL season, he hasn't had an off-season of NFL conditioning, he played behind a bad interior OL last year. The fact that he almost got 1K yards as a tandem back last year and would have if McDaniels didn't set him down in garbage time regularly is a good sign, not a bad one. Give the guy some real help and some time to get genuinely healthy before you judge him. |
