From my blog at http://sportsindenver.blogspot.com/
So many highlights to choose from for my top 12 all time bronco plays! This one didn't make my top 12 but I decided to include some of my other favorites before resuming the countdown. A game changing play in Dennis Smith's rookie year - a big hit forcing a fumble in overtime from the Brown's Calvin Hill. Smith had the smarts to stay in bounds and recover the fumble too. I included a couple of plays after the fumble to show the Broncos win - 10 minutes later Calvin Hill was still dazed walking off the field! From the clip you'll also see future Broncos play by play man Dave Logan of the Browns protesting that the ball was out of bounds. This was a key win for the Broncos in Dan Reeves 1st year as head coach (1981). Denver went on to finish 10-6. |

Dennis Smith as a Rookie. Wow.... so underrated. Guy belongs in the Hall.

It's easy to see why the Browns hate us so much! Awesome clip!

Man, what a shot.
Amazing how the game has changed because there's no way that would be ruled a catch today. |

Thats my MAN!!! A question though-- is it me, or do all of the greatest plays in the Denver Bronco's history come at the expense of the cleveland browns ? ![]() |

Broncos beat the Browns 23-20 in OT!
Hey where did we see that before? ![]() In this game Lyle Alzado, sacked Morton 3 times and took apart Dave Studdard pretty well. titan, I don't know if this is your tape or if you inherited a copy, but for 8-9 years I was the only guy in the collecting hobby that had this game. Would love to know if these are master tapes that you have, or if someone just hooked you up with copies. Either way, great stuff!! |

I sent B-Love a private message but in case any of the rest of you are wondering:
I bought a VCR when they first came out (around 1979) and I used to make my own bronco highlight tapes (I added a 2nd vcr to do this). I didn't save complete games. Wish I had saved the games now! I recently figured out how to extract the highlights I have and put them on youtube. Lots of great bronco memories. |

These are great titan, thank you so much for sharing. They bring back great memories. I remember being very excited about Smith that year as I loved the safety position (ask Herc!) and could see good things in the future after Foley and Thompson left. We should have made the playoffs that year but the loss to the Bills, the loss to the Chargers and that last game loss to a bad team (ARGGH) did us in. Again thank you!

That's not even close to Smith's biggest hit. Who knows which one is but it ain't that one.
In Mile High a few yrs later Nate Lewis was running a 9 route, fly str8 down sidelines. Smith met him crown of helmet to the face mask right as he was defenseless trying to grab the ball. Dude was knocked out, face bleeding, face mask broke, had to be cut off, carried off and done with for rest of game. Today you get kicked out or suspended even for that hit. Total head hunting brutality. Not sure if Smith could play in todays NFL. Atwater yes because he wasn't a lead with helmet guy. He was a shoulder tackler and very good at it. Smith was a missile heading straight for your noggin. |

Post them up people - I know for a fact i've seen guys begging for the Smith vs Potts hit for several years now. I'm one of those that continue to beg for Smith highlight hits.
