Default All Time Bronco plays: Steve Watson's 3 TD Game

From my blog at http://sportsindenver.blogspot.com/

Before we get to my top 5 bronco plays of all time it's time for some more "honorable mentions". Today:

Steve Watson was an undrafted free agent out of Temple who saw very little action with the Broncos in 1980 (6 receptions). The 1981 season started the same way, under new coach Dan Reeves, until Watson broke out with an incredible three td game in week 3:

Watson went on to score 13 touchdowns that year. Watson was one of the best Bronco wide receivers ever - he had an uncanny ability to make a catch if the football was anywhere in his vicinity. Look at this clip later in his career with Watson making a great catch from John Elway:

Next: another honorable mention play from an AFC Championship game

You can't go wrong with a white WR and Marv Albert announcing.

That over the shoulder catch was something, wow.

I remember a catch he had but I cant remember the game.

It was one handed over the shoulder, just unreal.

Love Steve Watson. He came to my high school and gave a graduation speech, it was very cool!

Watson added 2 more TDs the following week v. San Diego, including a 93 yarder. Thanks for the videos, I love this era.

People love to throw that total nonsens around that "Elway had nobody around him" and "took the team all by himself", etc.

Steve Watson was 2nd in the total NFL in Receiving yards between 1981 and 1986. Over the course of 6 years, he was number 2 in the entire NFL. Only Lofton had more and he was tied with Collinsworth for 2nd.

Not bad.

Watson had the best hands in the NFL at the time and the best hands in the history of the team. People who say McCaffrey are wrong.

I have all of these games, I just wish I knew how to post them like titan does! Awesome stuff titan! You rock!!

In the Baltimore game from '81, Marv Albert is the play by play guy and our Ring of Fame Kicker Jim "Tank" Turner is the color man. Albert and Turner were a natural pairing as they had a relationship from Turner's days with the Jets. Marv used to almost exclusively call Jets games for NBC in the early days. 2 plays before the first touchdown pass to Watson, Craig Morton eclipsed the 25,000 yards mark on a quick hitch to Watson, and got a nice ovation.

The incredible catch by Watson at San Diego was from 1983 in a game where the Broncos got murdered. It is most famous for the incident where Elway lined up under Left Guard Tom Glassic, instead of Center Billy Bryan. I had not seen this catch by Watson in over 10 years as that is NOT a tape I would really watch. WOW, Watson was unreal with his catches!

titan, in addition to the two TD's againts San Diego, he also scored on a 95 yarder against the Lions, which is one of my favorite tapes. But the game was JIP here, and I missed the 95 yard TD against the Lions. That was the only score when the game was JIP Denver leading 7-0. Billy Sims busted off a long TD to tie it up I think.

Any chance you have that clip?? Man would love to see that play. I've never seen the game call of that clip.

Steve's breakout season in 1981 was an out of the blue amazement.

You could make a very good argument he was the best WR in the league that year.

Hey, you're right. I was skeptical, so I looked it up:
1981 - Steve Watson
1244 receiving yards - 3rd in NFL
13 TD catches - 1st in league
13 total TDs - 5th in league
20.7 ypc - 4th in league
77.8 yards per game - 4th in league
95 long gain - 1st in league

Only the long-forgotten Alfred Jenkins was clearly better.

Dwight Clark, Steve Largent and James Lofton about even.

Watson got his playing time because Upchurch tweaked his hammy on a Punt Return in the 2nd quarter of the opening game and missed the next month. By that time, Watson had exploded for 5 TD's in back to back games in weeks 3 and 4.

When Upchurch returned for the week 5 game at Oakland, it was Haven Moses, whose playing time was greatly cut into.

Watson's explosion in 1981 led directly to Haven's retirement at the end of the 81 season. There was some bitterness between Haven and the Broncos during the 81 season.
