Default Greatest Bronco plays of all time: #9 Louie Wright's Blocked FG Return

From my blog at http://sportsindenver.blogspot.com/

Continuing the countdown of my all time greatest bronco plays:

Louie Wright returns a field goal blocked by Dennis Smith to beat San Diego in Overtime in this 1985 game:

I can't remember old Mile High Stadium being any louder than when Louie Wright was running this blocked kick in for a touchdown. What looked like defeat was transformed to sudden victory in just a few seconds! This play was actually a "replay" - just before the Broncos blocked San Diego's field goal and looked to be running in for the winning score, when the refs ruled that the Broncos had called timeout before the play began. The crowd was stunned. The Broncos solution? Do it again! Dennis Smith broke through to block the field goal, and there was no way a kicker was going to catch Wright as he ran for the winning score.

This game was key to the Broncos finishing 11-5 in 1985, however that was also the year an 11-5 record did not get the team a spot in the playoffs. One year later an 11-5 record won the AFC West and the Broncos went to their first John Elway Super Bowl.

Next: So many good highlights to choose from! I'm going to throw in an "honorable mention" play, one that didn't make my top 12 but deserves another look.

Seriously, this is great. I love being able to watch old footage from some of these older, slightly obscure (from a national standpoint...obviously not in Denver) games. It's great to reminisce. I was 10 in 1985 and was just starting to watch football. I have not seen that particular highlight in that way with the game broadcast. What a treat!! Thanks Titan!!

this might have been the first broncos game I ever watched.....I'll never forget Dan Reeves hugging Joel Collier on the sidelines while the rest of the place went nuts

Never saw this play, I was 1 year old! Again, great series.

Will the helicopter be #1? Rod early in SB 33 #2?

Flex, that's what I was thinking. Altho, I do think Champ's INT of Brady in 05 playoffs may be in top 5

I was in the South Stands for this game - my seats (right in the middle of section CC) were great for seeing field goal attempts. This kick was coming right at me (kicking towards the south end zone, until it was blocked!).

Glad you are enjoying these highlights - more to come!

Mile High magic.

Love the old "Denver" lettering in the end zone.

Badass - how can you not miss Mile High Stadium?

With all of these older games being posted we need an Atwater/Smith hit compilation, my son has no idea who Dennis Smith is

Titan you must hate Sam Rutigliano!!! !!!

The funny thing with titan's highlights so far is the DS49 hit broke Cleveland's heart, and they were coached by Rutigliano. The 1980 Gradishar play broker Rutigliano's heart as well.

And in the DS blocked FG clip above, San Rutigliano is the Color Man on the call.

! Great stuff titan.

Dennis Smith blocked 3 FG's in this game! OK, only 2 counted. He blocked one in the first half and then both of these back to back, though Harden called timeout to nullify the first one.

Unreal.

DS 49 was the man!!
