Default all week 17 games likely to be division games this year

per goodell. they are trying to make all week 16 games division games as well. i guess trying to recreate broncos v chargers 2008.

Really they are trying to prevent teams from mailing it in toward the end of the season. This is supposed to try and keep ratings up toward the end of the season. Sporting events is one of the few things that is must-see tv live, meaning not Tivo'd, and so that means more watched commercials and therefore more is charged for the commercials. If there are more meaningful games late in the season it will boost viewership and therefore TV revenue.

I've always thought the first 3 and the last 3 games should be division games. 3 good weather, 3 potentially bad weather. And you really have to have a stranglehold on your division to be 3 games up going into week 15.

It makes sense and even if your team is out, you still would watch to have them beat their rivals. As the old saying goes in Denver, "I dont care if we go 2 and 14, just as long as those two wins are against the Raiders."
