Default ESPN: McDaniels: Orton's the starter

McDaniels: Orton's the starter

Updated: March 23, 2010, 9:59 AM ET

Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels says there's "no question" Kyle Orton is the team's starting quarterback, according to The Denver Post. But he's leaving room for newly acquired Brady Quinn to compete for the job.

Earlier this month, the Broncos acquired the former first-round draft pick from the Cleveland Browns for fullback Peyton Hillis, a 2011 sixth-round draft pick and a conditional pick in 2012. That raised questions in Denver about who would be the starter in 2010.

But McDaniels, speaking at the NFL owners' meetings in Orlando, said Orton has earned the right to begin camp as the Broncos' starter.

"He's a guy who made the most of an opportunity he was given last year," McDaniels said, according to the report. "Kyle started all but one game for us last year, and he's got the respect of his teammates and coaches and we look forward to him improving. Now Brady's here competing, and as always, players determine their roles by what they do on the field."

Shortly after the trade, Quinn -- who competed with Derek Anderson for the starting job in Cleveland -- made it clear he wanted to compete for the starting job in Denver. Quinn said the coaches would make the decision on who plays, but the players have to prepare to be the starter.

"I'll put it this way, I think every quarterback on our roster wants to play," Quinn said at the time. "Believe me, whether it's Tom [Brandstater], Kyle, or myself, we're all quarterbacks. We're going to be team players first, but we all want to be out there playing."

When the trade happened, Orton welcomed Quinn and said he was happy to work with him. But Orton also said he expected to be the starter, adding he had talked to McDaniels about Quinn before the trade was made

"I will keep [the conversation with McDaniels] private but I do have total confidence that I'm the guy there,'' Orton said at the time, according to The Denver Post. "Just like every year I'm going in to try and earn my starting job. I don't think I have anything to fret.''

On Monday, McDaniels said he welcomed the competition.

"There are guys that are definitely starters, and until someone comes in to knock them off their spot, it's going to be that way," McDaniels said, according to the Post. "Brady's a player who fits a lot of the qualities and characteristics we look for in our quarterbacks. We feel like we have three who are in that same boat. It made sense for us to try to improve the competition at that position just like it does when we try to improve our competition at any position."

I am really surprised people keep bugging McD about this. I don't know why people would assume that a QB who didn't play for this team last year and was out for part of the year would start over teh QB who did play for this team last year and was only out due to injury for a small amount of time.

Its like on one hand I have a Honda Accord that I drove all last year just fine. On the other I have a Toyota Camry that was owned by another driver and I am aware that was in and out of the mechanics all year. I haven't driven the Camry, but I know exactly how the Accord drives and I haven't compared their handling to each other yet. Which one am I more likely to drive to work today? The Orton-Accord of course. Until the Quinn-Camry can prove its more reliable.

But, yes, I just compared Quinn and Orton to two average foreign automobiles.

The Marshall and Scheffler trades have to go down before then. If not, the Broncos will lose a ton of leverage when the RFA period expires.

In other news, water is wet. Quinn hasn't had a chance to take the job from Orton, yet. Camp will be a better indication whether Orton starts...

Wasn't Culter the starter and franchise quarterback in March last year. And didn't McDaniels hold up a Culter jersey last around this time saying that he's his quarterback??

McDaniels point of view:

Campbell < Orton < Quinn < Cassel

McD is saying the right thing now. But he's going to give Quinn every chance to win that job, and he's probably hoping that Quinn lives up to his potential because McD probably doesn't want to hitch his wagon to Orton. Orton isn't going to lead the Broncos very far. If McD sticks with him for the next couple of years and they miss the playoffs then he'll be on the hot seat. That's how the NFL works now a days. Coaches don't have very long to prove themselves.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The draft pick the Browns receive in 2012 in the Brady Quinn trade to Denver can be as high as the third round, a league source said, or as low as the sixth.

Those conditions are based on playing time over the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
No matter what Quinn does for the Broncos in 2010, the Browns will receive Denver's sixth-round pick in 2011 in addition to fullback Peyton Hillis.

I really don't think he believes Quinn is better than Orton. I think he believes Quinn is someone he wants a crack at coaching. I personally wouldn't be surprised to see Brandstater push for number two in camp either.

I'm going to go on record right now and say that Quinn is going to create the same amount of hype as Simms, maybe more so, whereby people will believe he's the better player right out of the gate. I think Orton will play a step better going into year two but people still won't notice and whine for Quinn. Then when/if he gets put in the game due to injury Quinn will look pretty much like he did in Cleveland.

The media will certainly play Quinn up but I think the job will be Orton's till the start of the season. Its funny because Quinn and Orton are similar in the sense that both play really well when they have a solid pocket to throw in. If our line plays well, then Orton will probably do well enough that there won't be reason to put Quinn in the game. If our line does horrible then its
not going to matter whether Quinn or Orton are playing. Both tend to crumble under pressure.

I think we picked up Quinn just to be there when Orton goes down (i.e. a back QB) from another ankle injury. It seems McD would have preferred to have Quinn starting last year but now Orton is a little bit entrenched in the starting spot so its his job to lose.

Brandstater may or may not be good but no one knows and I'm guessing he's not going to see time unless Quinn and Orton go down.

All this being said, I like the strategy of stockpiling QBs. Funny because its quite the opposite of what we were used to Shanny. The Patriots have been making bank off of backup QBs and now the Chargers are getting in on the racket. I'm starting to think holding on to 4 qbs isn't such a bad idea.
