Default Broncos Gearing Up For Hillis Replacement

by Chris Steuber of ScoutNFLNetwork.com, March 15, 2010 at 10:10pm ET

A day after the Denver Broncos traded fullback Peyton Hillis and draft picks to the Cleveland Browns for quarterback Brady Quinn, Scout.com has learned that the Broncos will conduct a private workout with Stanford running back Toby Gerhart in his hometown of Norco, California on Wednesday, March 24th.

In addition to his workout with the Broncos, Scout.com has also learned that Gerhart will work out for the New York Jets at Stanford University on Tuesday, March 30th.

The 6-foot, 231-pound Gerhart stormed onto the scene this past season after he had 343 carries for 1,871 yards and 27 touchdowns. Often compared to former Tampa Bay Buccaneers fullback Mike Alstott, the winner of the 2009 Doak Walker Award, Gerhart surprised scouts at the NFL Scouting Combine with his athleticism and straight line speed; he ran a 4.55 in the 40 and recorded a 38-inch vertical in Indianapolis.

Gerhart could come off the board as early as the mid-second round, and the worst-case scenario will have him falling into the third round. Going back to the Gerhart-Alstott comparison, Alstott was the 35th overall pick in 1996; Gerhart could end up going to the Broncos with the 45th overall selection this year.

So Hillis fans can now rejoice! We could end up with the next great white rhino

That would be a good replacement for him. He went to Stanford so I doubt he is a ruh-tard.

at that point we would have essentially shuffled off a second round pick for Quinn, which is a big no.

people around here always assume that a loss of a player at one position is no big deal if we then replace that person with a high draft pick--they conveniently forget that the opportunity cost of that replacement is then the pick itself, which could have been used elsewhere, were the need not created to begin with.

Youre assuming its an even replacement or a replacement to begin with. Regardless of what people here think of Peyton, the coaching staff didnt like him. So if they do draft gerhart in the third, they will see it as a major upgrade to peyton.

Gerhart was a ton of fun to watch at Stanford, would make a great compliment back to Moreno.

Gerhart isn't a Hillis replacement different skills sets completely. Hillis was at best a Rathman style FB in WCO scheme. Gerhart is power running back in the mode of NYG's Jacobs or Ironhead Haywood.

What is this garbage? Just because they are both white running backs (if you can even call Hillis a RB, he's more of a 3rd string fullback) doesn't mean one is a replacement for the other. I guarantee that if we draft Gebhardt, we would be giving him more than 15 touches, and I guarantee that he wouldn't fail in over a third of the touches we gave him, like Hillis did.

That would be great, especially since those touches would replace Moreno touches who seems to fail half the time.

Doesn't seem too critical to replace a guy who wasn't playing.

I like the kid...but, what we need is speed! Moreno is a 4.7 guy and looks like he wears cement for cleats. We need a kid like spiller who can take it to the house...that's the compliment to Moreno...I'm looking for!

I don't care who's running the ball as long as we get the problems fixed up front. I lost count of how many times defenders were in the backfield or completely shutting down inside lanes.

Sure, some of it had to do with our inability to get the ball downfield and hopefully Orton can take that next step but a lot of it just came down to a piss poor interior unable to handle the power stuff in the trenches.
