would Bowlen and Broncos fans tolerate 5 straight seasons OUT of the playoffs? or does McD have the job until his contract is up simply because Bowlen doesn't want to start all over again with another new coach? now that Shanny is working for Snyder, it shouldn't be a money issue any more.

Yes, unless we go something absurdly terrible like 3-13, McDaniels will be given at least 3 years to implement his system. Now if we miss the playoffs in 2011 as well, I think he's history.

So I guess there will be 4 years since 2011 is unlikely to happen. I would be shocked if we do not make the playoffs this year though.

It probably depends on the circumstances. Bowlen may not tolerate another total meltdown...

i kinda agree with you. even as a McD supporter initially (and still), there is a clear Napoleon complex going on up at Dove Valley with McD. last season was a disaster no matter how anyone spins it. losing 8 of 10 to finish the year is a major meltdown. something like that happening again and i can see McD in real trouble going into the offseason. it would only take the availability of a willing and proven HC for Bowlen to pull the trigger, IMHO.

I would vote to fire him, but I'm not sure Bowlen will feel the same way.

Yep... depends how we miss the playoffs.

Go 9-7 and just miss and we see McKidd another year.

win the first 3 only to lose 10 out of the next 13 and we could be coach hunting next offseason.

Short of 3-13 or worse, he'll get 3 years.

what about this... Broncos start 3-0, then lose 10 of 13 to finish 6-10. then Coach Cowher decides to come out of retirement and expresses interest in Denver being HC and GM. is there any way Bowlen keeps McD?

He'd have to go.

The fanbase would be in a full fledged revolt.

Which might happen anyway with no football looming in 2011.

He'll be back, even if we go 3-13.

By the way, I don't think we'll go 3-13. I'd be shocked if we were anywhere below .500, and I think we're closer to 10-6/11-5.

I tend to agree with those who say it depends. Let's be honest. The chefs and faide are not that great. one might argue that the chefs have their act together more so than Denver, but they traded for Cassell. I mean we tried, but at least we failed (thank God). SD is imploding. Making a run at teh playoffs is not that far fetched ... even given what we saw with the defense and interior oline.

Yes.

To take your hypothetical scenario further, what if McD goes 3-13, gets fired, Bowlen hires Cowher, who proceeds to go 8-8 and then 3-13. Does he then get fired and we bring in a new HC?

Only if Nick Saban, or some other incredibly overrated coach by this board is available.

truthfully for most fans the team is in the 1st serious rebuild that some fans have ever seen, it just hurts worse, because unlike teams that rebuild and drop to 3-13 records for a couple seasons, we are just remaining middle of the pack and seemingly not improving.

Bowlen understands, this team was in dire need of a complete overhaul and he knows, that doesn't happen in a single season.

You can't expect to win much with 2 avg qb's and weaknesses in key areas that aren't filled yet, This team isn't ready for playoffs yet. Add the possibilty of no Marshall weakens us more.

2012 offseason is earliest I see the possibility of a HC change.

Denver needs some great drafts to get us to next level.

I like what the FO has done in FA.

He'll have a very fair shot at turning things around here in Denver. First of all, we will not go 3-13 or anything of the sort. Second all all, Bowlen is not going to race out to start the interview process all over again.

I really think we are heading in the right direction between the roster overhaul last season and the moves the FO has made this offseason (except for Andra Davis...that's still a shocking move).

I can see us going 10-6 or better next year with teams from the NFCW on our calendar as well as the AFCS....plus we'll be in a better position to beat Oakland and KC twice in 2010.
