Pats tag Pro Bowl NT Wilfork; big $$$ deal still possible
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)
The New England Patriots have put the franchise tag on Pro Bowl nose tackle Vince Wilfork.
The Patriots said Monday they made the move to continue negotiating a long-term agreement with the six-year veteran. They said that agreement has been their top contractual priority and Wilfork remains a significant part of their plans.
Wilfork has said he would not be happy if the team put the franchise tag on him.
The team did not say if it used the exclusive tag, which would prevent another team from signing Wilfork this year, or a non-exclusive tag, which would give the Patriots the right to match any offer for him or receive two first-round draft picks if they don't.
Mike Reiss, of ESPNBoston.com, reports the New England Patriots placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on DL Vince Wilfork Monday, Feb. 22. The team still hopes to reach a long-term deal with Wilfork. Other teams can host him as a free agent and potentially sign him to an offer sheet. If the Patriots decide not to match an offer sheet, they would receive two first-round draft picks. If Wilfork signs his franchise tender with the Patriots, it would be a one-year deal at $7 million.

He will definitely get a huge contract - not.
In trading Seymour the Patriots showed they are not going to give out any big contracts until the CBA is settled, so Wilfork will play under his franchise tag or not.
