Scottrade, one of the country's largest online brokerage firms, said Monday it plans to bring about 285 jobs to a new Westminster operations center over the next five years.

"We hope to relocate a small number of people from our St. Louis headquarters, and the others we are hoping to hire there in the Denver area," said Janet Wulf, chief administrative officer.

Plans call for about 30 to 40 jobs in the near term, she said.

Last month, Scottrade purchased 10955 Westmoor Drive, a four-story, 204,000-square-foot building in the Westmoor Technology Park.

The Westminster facility will serve as a backup operations center providing "backroom" and technical-support services.

Brokers there will also assist customers, especially those on the West Coast, given the lesser time-zone difference than with the East Coast.

The company plans to pay 110 percent of the average wage offered in Jefferson County, Wulf said.

The average weekly wage in Jefferson County was $928 in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Although Scottrade looked at other Western cities for its new center, Westminster was already home to Computer Research Inc., a sister company that provides financial software, Wulf said.

The Westminster City Council approved an assistance package worth up to $196,215 on Monday night based on a rebate of permit fees and use tax on construction and purchases, said John Hall, a business-development officer with the city.

County and state incentives are also under consideration, the company said.

Fortune magazine named Scottrade one of the 100 best companies to work for in each of the past three years, and the firm has never laid off workers, Wulf said. The company employs more than 3,000 and has 425 branch offices, including 10 in Colorado.

Scottrade hasn't determined exactly when it will start hiring for the new center, but positions will be posted at www.scottrade.jobs. Applicants can also submit a resume online in advance for consideration, Wulf said.
