Default Dawkins on McD: "I'm behind him."

PFT

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 28, 2010 9:48 AM ET

Many league observers thought Denver overpaid to bring Brian Dawkins in last offseason. The Broncos surely feel their money was well spent after the 36-year-old put together a Pro Bowl season with the Broncos.

Now Dawkins will have to learn another scheme. Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is gone, but Dawkins says he trusts his head coach.

"If that's where Josh feels like that's we need to go in order for us to take the next step, to be on the same page, then that's what I'm willing to do," Dawkins said on NFL Network. "I told [Josh] and I'll tell you guys, I'm behind him. If he made that decision, there's a reason why he made it, I trust him, and whoever he brings in as a defensive coordinator, he's going to have Brian Dawkins on his side."

At this stage, Broncos linebackers coach Dean Martindale looks like the favorite to get the coordinator job. Whoever gets the gig will have an easier time winning over the locker room with Dawkins in his corner.

I like the fact that Dawkins is vocalizing his support. Being such a leader in the locker room, it will help influence some of the younger guys that they need to trust the decision the coaching staff and FO make and understand they are doing these things in the best interest of the team.

I, for one, would hate to be a week or two before the season and see Nolan leave due to a conflict with McD. That happened (HC/Coordinator conflict) with Tampa Bay, KC and Buffalo this past year and I don't remember any of those teams doing well in 2009.

The Broncos defensive coordinator position has become our defense against the dark arts position at Hogwarts.

He could say nothing. And he certainly didn't have to offer a defense or explanation for McD's decision to cut ties with Nolan.

Lol, I wondered how long it would take the "what else is he going to say" crowd to get here.

It matters not what you think.

This is a summary of an NFL network interview with Dawkins at the pro-bowl from yesterday. I watched it. Very good.

The man's definitely a pro. He avoided every question about any controversial issue with the "I'm behind him mantra."

When asked about the benching of Brandon Marshall in week 17, he DID elaborate. He said he was behind the coaches decisions on what he feels is best to win and that whoever the boss is (Bowlen and McDaniels) he wants them to be aware that Brian Dawkins is on their side. Then he explained that some of the decisions made he hasn't agreed with but that's for discussion behind closed doors and not for the public.

I'm sure if the not agreeing on some of Josh's decisions was coincidentally answered lumped in with the Brandon Marshall situation or not.

Regardless, it was a great interview with a pro's pro.

Ed McCaffrey and Mark Schlereth were pretty good as well.. back when the Broncos won the Super Bowl because of a certain 6th round draft pick and other free agent signings (Romonowski, Griffith, Neil Smith, Alfred Williams etc.)

No surprise that Dawkins is toeing the party line as he doesn't want to rock the boat.

Not too many soon to be 37 year old safeties making the money he is.

But he's still a helluva pickup.

Great signing, love Dawkins. But how much longer is he actually going to play? What happens when he's gone in, more than likely, a year?

Why would a team that is on the rise need its defensive captain to state he is behind the HC?

But I have a hard time imagining that it took you 13 minutes to find one picture.

Why you got to keep pushing the offensive? People are entitled to their opinions and that was about the most mild outburst of irritation we've had on here. This is exactly the kind of sidetracking bull**** that ruins 90% of the football related threads on here.
