McCain to get primary challenger
It appears former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-AZ) is taking steps to run against Sen. John McCain (sometimes R-AZ) for his Senate seat in 2010. While he has yet to formally announce, Hayworth quit his radio talk show yesterday and says he will be "heard from soon". McCain is already taken the unusual step of running attack ads against Hayworth on local broadcast outlets.
One major difference between the two will be on illegal immigration. Hayworth has been a chief proponent of tougher laws and tougher punishment for illegals while McCain sponsored an immigration bill in 2007 co-sponsored with Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Hell) that many claimed was tantamount to amnesty.
Former running mate Sarah Palin has said she will campaign on McCain's behalf, despite the fracture it may cause between her and many in the Tea Party movement who see McCain as a symbol of past Republican sell-outs.
Bottom line is that McCain is going to have to spin more to the right to win his September primary and will be less likely to become a 60th vote on issues like health care, immigration and cap and trade.
