It's in Open Beta right now... lasting till the 27th or 28th I believe.

I've played it but I'm going to lay off my critique for now.

I wonder if there's the U.S.S. Popps flying around.

I got my key from videogamer.com but they're out of keys.

This seems to be the easiest way to get one. Just use an email that you never use if you don't want their lame newsletter and get your key easy as pie.

I think DS9 is the best Star Trek available. I'm going to have to check this out.

The game is set further in the future so don't expect to see Sisko running around the station.

Oh, it has Leonard Nimoy voiceovers when you enter a new sector, though. VERY cool.

No interest in wasting time on this game when Mass Effect 2 comes out in a mere few days:

To be fair that game will be done with in 24-30 hours... say 55 since Bioware games always ask for a 2nd play-through via a different approach good/bad.

An MMO will butcher just about any singleplayer game in terms of playability. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3 are rare games that can push past 100 hours of gameplay on the same character in a single player game.

Going to give my critique now too.

Before you read this I suggest you try the game. I should also make it clear that games and stuff of this nature are in what I do for a living so I'm completely ****ing brutal when it comes to analyzing this stuff. Bob I wouldn't read if I was you, since I think you like this game.

Anyhow here goes my fairly long review...

Basically unless your a die hard Star Trek fan (and I do mean die hard... and overly optimistic) that is willing to deal with intense growing pains for months, not to mention you're immune to grinding monotonous, dull, and repetitive zones for experience to level up... this game isn't for you.

The space battles while great fun at first become very boring after the 8-10 hour mark. For instance the ship you start with only has 3 weapons... two in the front and one in the rear. You basically auto fire everything and manually shoot your torpedo's when a target's shields are down. Rinse and repeat forever.

A neat thing is the concept of shields. You have four sides that you can balance shields around. This concept was taken from Age of Conan. It adds some spice to combat but it's hardly enough to make you go WOW, this is so AWESOME, I'll never get tired of this... this alone is worth $15 a month!

The ground combat even more uninspired. Basically use your one special move, and then you have a gun that you can melee with that has an auto attack and one special move of its own that's on a cooldown. Combined with four other NPC's that follow you around, or in some cases other people if you form a group. Very... very few movies to do overall. Also only three "classes" to chose from. Basically a DPS, Tank, Healer/Support.

Speaking of NPC's, these are your officers for your ship. They don't talk. They don't do a damned thing. They're boring lifeless avatars... well technically they plaster an image of one of your crew to read some lines for a mission a few times but you get the point... it's stupid.

The game itself is extremely linear with very little diversity in the available content.

Areas are extremely grim as well. The inside of space station that orbits Earth is pathetically small, even though it's quite massive from outside when you see it in your giant ship.

You can't actually do anything in your ship aside from visit the bridge which is quite open and looks like nothing from the movies. Hell you can't even sit in the captain's chair. Weren't extensive amounts of the shows inside of the ships/stations? OOOPS!!!

The concept of Star Trek was about exploration and interesting stories that involving questing to find new worlds and people, yada yada.

This game completely fails in grasping that ideology. Rather it feels like the developers watched the first 15 minutes of First Contact and decided that's what the IP was about. Oh wait... that's exactly what the freaking introduction tutorial was based on.

Missions where you do go on planets (out of the ship) are disgraceful and show little to know ingenuity.

One mission I kid you not was talk to this mining dude. He tells you everyone is unhappy, so you talk to five people and then he gives you a quiz based on what they said. Answer it all right and you get your experience and move on. It was beyond easy and boring as hell. No twists, no surprises, no nothing. Was like ordering food at a drive-through.

Other missions feel extremely generic and almost entirely rendered on the spot. I literally can't believe that some of these missions have been designed because they look so bad that they were randomly generated. Again another mission for an example. I had to collect pieces of a probe or something. You'd get a piece and follow the road where you'd fight "thugs", rinse repeat. Follow the road, kill some "thugs" get a probe part until you had them all at the end of the road and the mission was over.

I got to Lieutenant 7 (basically level 7) before I called it quits because at that point it had been nothing but the same dull and boring grind for a while (hard to believe they couldn't come up with a better game plan to get people hooked on first impressions). At least Age of Conan, while a POS game overall had a very well done intro with Tortage that played like a fun single player RPG with the multiplayer aspect still around you.

I have absolutly no drive to hit Lieutenant Commander (level 11) to get a new ship. There are three classes of ships btw, which mirror the player counterparts of DPS, Tank, and Healer/Support.

All in all this game took a poor page out of the Korean MMO handbook by making an uninspired grindfest... only they did it with a popular IP because they knew it would rake in a **** ton of initial sales.

Cryptic Studios has already made an MMO in the past called Champions Online. Another IP that they themselves never created, and a game that imo was a complete flop of an MMO... but they also originally made City of Heroes which wasn't a horrible game (not out of this world amazing either though). It seems they never actually learned from their experience in the MMO genre and while they have been able to copy a lot of the Star Trek look in this game they have completely missed what Star Trek is.

This game is Star Trek in looks/sounds only, and practically nothing else. It's completely devoid of the "essence" of the IP in my opinion. I'm still shocked by how poor the level design is. To **** up the social zones is just beyond me, but I guess they figured with split servers (only 45-50 or so people on the space station at once) that they'd just skimp everything out. I would have made them bigger and allowed more people myself to encourage social interaction within the community and foster friendships creation (which is one of, if not the biggest reason WoW still has so many subscribers - online friends).

NOW that I have bashed the **** out of this game, and deservedly so in my opinion.

I will say that this game CAN get better in the future. But it's all up to Cryptic and if they get serious especially in the quest design and writing front. The gameplay issues can be fixed, but if they want this game to kill and draw people in the BIGGEST thing that matters is STORY and CONTENT. Luckily this ALSO can be FIXED. So there is HOPE for this game if Cryptic Studios gets their **** together and actually decide step outside the generic MMO box and tailor this game towards the IP rather than the generic games of the genre.

The vast majority of people who play this game want to become immersed in the Star Trek universe and creating a constant flow of well designed planets and quests to make them feel are actually the captain of a ship in the Federation (like those in the TV shows/movies) is what they seek.

Do to the complete lack of ingenuity (what they've done in the MMO gameplay wise isn't new outside of the ships and that itself gets boring quick unless you are entertained by repetitive lasers and explosions to no end) - piss poor writing, and a failure at actually grasping and creating a Star Trek universe (which is beyond pathetic in my opinion with all the TV shows/films to draw upon) I give the game the following score out of 10.

5.5/10 - if this game didn't have Star Trek in the title it would be a flop already. Honestly I'd give it lower but I feel bad for the Star Trek IP.

If you're into grind fests and think flying around and pimping out your own space ship/player/NPC crew in a Star Trek "themed" universe is a fun time, then this game is probably going to be a blast for you.

It may very well get better post launch (I hope it does) but I don't intend to buy the game let alone pay a few months of subscription fee's to find out.

...I could have lead a group of unemployed modders to make a better game than what I've seen so far.

Still, I suggest people try out the Beta since it's FREE and hey... it's actually fun game for the first few hours. Most games these days don't last very long anyway so why not give yourself a treat to some free gaming.

Some of you may think I'm an a-hole for posting about a game that I think blew it big, but hey... Bob likes it and he seems to be a massive Star Trek nerd, so /shrug.

Also, as Pontius Pirate mentioned though Mass Effect 2 is coming out. If you've got some bank to spend on a game that would be one to do for sure. Bioshock 2 is also coming out, though I'm not sure if it will be anywhere as good as it's predecessor yet.

Also, if you're looking into MMO's, Star Wars: The Old Republic (also by Bioware) should be out next spring and will be the game to play in that arena. It's going to suck at least 1/3 of WoW's North American fanbase away in the first few months based on what I've seen thus far out of it.

I can't even begin to fathom how this could be good. Consider it's based on an IP, which fans of are pretty rabid, imo. How could you POSSIBLY mix an MMO, which is constant combat, with Star Trek, which was about EXPLORATION. After reading up on some of the forum posts, my worst fears were true. "Science" missions where you go down.. and Klingons are behind every rock. Space combat repeated ad naseum. This isn't Star Trek. It's not even close.

I can't even fathom the holy trinity for the game. Tank / healer / dps. You have frigging LASERS for cripes sake. Other than the movies, I've never seen a combat sequence last longer than a few seconds, ever. You get skills like "threaten." Yea.. ok.. you are hardly wearing spikes and weilding a nasty weapon. You look like all the other dudes in uniforms. How in the world are you threatening them.. looking at them in a gruff manner?

I love some MMOs (playing Aion atm.. which.. now is failing for me. Had promise, going south fast). But I won't even try Star Trek, it can't possibly capture the premise of the series in an MMO. Personally I'd love a solid Star Trek game where it has a lot more diplomatic options, and missions more akin to the show. This game is going to bomb hard imo.

Eve at least, has a logical premise for the game (although it's a bit boring as well. woo asteroid farming!)

Star Wars probably will be a lot better, if you are into space games.

I don't care about the IP. I've always wanted an MMO where you control a capital star ship. I'm stoked to try this out.

What sucks is that this game could have been amazing. They just took the completely wrong approach. Basically they were a bunch of lazy ****s and used chunks of their design documents from their past MMO's. They've made it a glorified frag fest and ignored the story part of the game. It's why the Star Wars game is going to be so good. It's literally going to be 8-10 single player games mixed with some online play co-operation. The game is also completely voice acted, which is what Star Trek should have been.

All the NPC officers have abilities you can use in space combat. And they level up with you as you gain experience, and you can promote them. Far from doing nothing.

I agree with this. Most of the planetside missions are terrible. I do like some of the "boarding party" missions and have enjoyed stuff like raiding Klingon weapons research facilities and genetic experimentation bases. The exploratory-based missions are all complete garbage, though.

There's no quest chains that result even in a modicum of story telling. The tips the play out at the bottom of the loading screen show more narrative power. Maybe the story telling gets better, and I really like the space combat and the character system, so I can only hope. But right now I'll be saving my money for KOTOR.

I mentioned the dps/tank/healing thing. The crew serve as boring avatars. You can promote them ok, neat? They act like power-ups to your ship with their moves... ok neat? Solid story telling would have developed these crew members as characters, forced you to give a damn about them. Maybe even have a mission where one gets injured and is in the medical bay for a 48 hour period and then you could visit said member etc.

Indeed the missions blow.

Sounds neat and all with the back through time thing but I doubt the gameplay is any less repetitive. You'll go back, kill this amount of squads of Klingon, you'll save or get saved by the Enterprise, you'll warp back to your time, do the next thing. The writing is just real bad, as is the storytelling or lack there of. Ripping off an overused Star Trek/Sci-Fi plot (time travel) doesn't really show anything special... and to be honest something like going back in time to help the Enterprise should be a massive story arch that takes many hours to do, almost like a mini single player game. It sounds like they just threw that in there with the "this would be super cool" philosophy not the "how can we make this a memorable and epic gaming experience" train of thought.

The most "storyesq" thing in the game before I stopped (for me) was the Ambassador mission. Oh my he was really a bad changeling *plot twist*... plow through more of the same packs of Klingon mobs. Now hold off against his giant neat ship until your NPC friends come and kill him. A good game will make that twist piss you off or feel an emotion, for me it was just... uh ok, time to kill him I guess.

It's cool that you're enjoying it... more power to you, but I'll just never get into a game made the way Star Trek: Online was.

I tracked an attack on a medical ship all the way back to a secret klingon base where they were performing genetic experiments, and now that has morphed into a time travel plot.

There's plenty of quest chain.
