Default Marshall Is a Difficult Fit in Any Offense

This is not an article meant to bash Brandon Marshall by focusing on his off the field issues or tear him down and call him a bad player. It is merely an evaluation of a very good receiver and the severe limitations he brings to an offense that tries to use him as its No. 1 receiver. It is of my opinion that Marshall, as he is right now, is not a true No. 1 receiver in the NFL. Now I'm sure when people hear this they will look at me like I am crazy, but there is definitely a valid reason for this if you look at a key stat from this year's numbers.

Yes the key stat being the 11.1 yard per catch. I guess Fitz falls into the same boat as Marshall then?

When I see Marshall, I see without question the best possession, No. 2 receiver in the NFL. I know this may seem crazy to some, but if you take a look at the pairing of Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin in Arizona, you see my point.

Fitzgerald is the guy who can fly into the air and pull down some ridiculous catches, which forces the defense to play further back, opening more underneath routes and of course the running game. Then Boldin is the counter-punch; when the defense is forced to back up to respect Fitzgerald, Boldin can get the ball on a short underneath route and abuse the defense with his impressive after the catch abilities.

Straight from that article. All the world of respect for Fitzgerald and his blazing speed but leaving out the fact that Fitzgerald was targeted one less time then Marshall with four less catches and a damn near a identical YPA. Marshall had 457 yards after catch to Fitzgerald's 249.

What a load.

People like Marvin Harrison, Jerry Rice and Larry Fitzgerald are all known for their amazing deep speed.

Is Larry Fitzgerald a true number 1? well he is according to this guy, what was his average this year? 11.3 yards same as Brandon. Steve Smith from the Giants? 11.4, Roddy White 13.6, Reggie Wayne, 12.6. I would call all of those guys number 1 recievers.

This guy can't have watched many games with comment like this:
Quote:
Marshall's playing style most mimics that of New England's Wes Welker, who this season finished with 123 catches, 1,348 yards, 11.0 YPC, and four TDs.
Their playing styles are very different, their stat lines are not dissimilar, but playing styles very different. Welker creates seperation through good route running, quickness and ability to read defenses and adjust. Marshall creates seperation with his strength and uses his size to screen defenders while making catches.

I don't buy it either. I think Marshall fits in any offense. Who doesn't need a good possession guy with the field vision to take the ball to the house on any given touch?

Also, I'm embarassed for anyone who makes the statement that Marshall's playing style is similar to Wes Welker. Might as well throw in that he's got the base running skills of Jose Reyes. Why not?

Marshall has now proved that he can be a 100 rec, 1200 yard, 7-10TD receiver in multiple roles in different offenses. Whoever wrote that piece doesn't understand football all that well. BMarsh is a top tier WR, better than guys like Greg Jennings, Roddy White or Chad Jackson... All of which are paid like #1 receivers!

Any team in the league would be lucky to have Marshall's on the field production. The off the field stuff doesn't seem to go away though.

On the field. He dropped in the draft and has had issues every season since, culminating being deactivated for the final game this year.

I wish this guy would screw his head on straight but he pissed off Shanny and Cutler before McDaniels, Bailey and Dawkins.

He's a beast when he wants to be.

He fits fine into any offense. His physical skills aren't the problem.

Pony Boy, u r soooo wrong. Brandon can be a #1 receiver on 24 teams minimum (yes, a number I like to throw out). He is a #1 and teams would give up a #1 plus more for him. He is already a proven #1 WR. Only problem is will there be less because of his behavior? He is a ME player not a team player. Some team out there wont care and need a top notch wideout. Maybe Chicago? He would help out Cutler to at least some b****in stats for fantasy football.

That's a very "message board guy" question.

You really think there's no middle ground between Marshall and Cinderella, huh?

I need to explain it to you?

Cinderella needs to put on about 20 pounds of muscle if she's going to be effective over the middle.

Plus I've heard that her helmet fits her a little big.

Good one.

And this is why nobody likes Bleacher Report stories.

5th player to ever have 3 straight 100 catch seasons. He has the first and third place record for most receptions in a game. He has been one of the best receivers after the catch in the NFL. He has been productive with both Orton and Cutler(I bet you have called one of these bad and argued it a ton). All of that and he just completed his 4th year. He has missed at least a game in each of the past 2 seasons and was still one of the most productive receivers.

This is why bloggers on the bleacher report aren't taken seriously. Marshall is on pace for a HOF career and you are trying to convince people he isn't a real number one? Riiiight...

Most of us look at the Marshall situation as fans. I do too most of the time. That being said, Brandon has to do what is best for him. NFL careers are short, and if you didn't come in as a 1st round draft pick, you aren't making enough money to live on for the rest of your life. I do not blame him for wanting to get paid top dollar, that is his issue, if I was doing the work I would expect to get paid.

BMarsh played in an brand new offense, with new coaches, and a new quarterback and put up better numbers than he did the year before, also Brandon didn't have any fumbles this year either, which was a big issue the previous year.

What is Brandon Marshall worth to the Broncos? IDK. But trading him away for draft picks, which have a huge chance of not being anything special is not the way to make your team better. I hope we pay him and fix the holes we have so we can make a playoff run next year, rather than create another hole and spend our money on unproven college players.

I love how everyone is saying that Brandon has no interest or value, and isn't even a true number one...

Meanwhile we go back a month and look at Brandon breaking TO's record.

Talking point from Dove Valley didn't make sense last off-season, and they don't make sense already this off-season.
