Default Hypothetical Situation: Elway on this team... our record?

So, we've seen a ton of "fantasy" scenarios being played out around here with regards to "what-ifs," etc.

After posting another thread showing Shanny/McDaniels first season as head coaches being very similar in almost every measurable way, I stumbled upon a thought....

What if McDaniels had inherited this exact team, only with John Elway at the QB position? So, you can remove any players acquired in the Cutler trade from your equation.

Just curious if people think Elway would have made a difference this season.

What would our record have been?

I am guessing McD would have traded Elway away before TC.

6-10 john would have trouble running this offense at his age.

The thought of Elway to Marshall gives me a chubby.

Are we talking a rookie Elway or a veteran Elway that Shanahan got? We would have been 19-0 this year with Elway. Even McDaniels couldn't make him bad. The offensive line wouldn't have suddenly become a problem and all receivers other than Marshall wouldn't have forgotten how to play. The good defense they built wouldn't have worn down and lost confidence from having to bail out the offense so much. The world would be a wonderful place with rainbows and sunshine every day.

Same Elway Shanahan got. (Which was probably the most effective of his career, overall.)

Well, it gave someone a "chubby," so some people are doing O.K. with it.

Elway has trouble running anything at his age, hasn't he had bilateral knee replacement surgery?

Obviously, we're talking the Elway that Shanahan inherited when he took over as coach.

Aren't you supposed to be taking a year off?

Didn't we talk about this?

So do we have to figure out the record based on Elway being limited to the pocket like Orton was due to lack of mobility?

If so then I give him 8-8 behind the same line.

If McD designed a gameplan that played to Elway's strengths, which I have not seen McD do all year, then I would go with 11-5. I am guessing John would have a few more Comebacks than Orton did this year if he was not restricted to the pocket and forced to wear 20lbs of weights on each leg to make him as slow as Orton is.

All I am saying is that if John was forced to throw to Clady it would have worked and been the best play ever.

Well, Shanahan didn't "devise a game plan to Elway's strengths." In fact, John did indeed struggle a bit to get comfortable in the system. He said so himself. (And it showed.)

So, no... it would just be John playing in the system we're implementing.

(Which I think he would have actually been nicely suited to... as a side note.)

We would have lost the Cincy game, since only an insane pass would have worked in that context and Elway would never have thrown it.

We would have lost the Redskins game and the Chargers rematch, assuming that Elway would have gotten dinged up like Orton.

We would have won the New England game in any event, because Elway always beat the Pats, period.

I am pretty sure he could have pulled out the Raiders rematch.

We would have still been killed by Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Not sure about the KC rematch. If Elway had no running game and a defense that gave up 300 yards rushing - - meh - - it would have been tough.

He might have been able to pull a win out the Philly game, provided that his receivers didn't drop as many passes. Oops. But wait, they probably would anyway.

Okay, I come up with either 8-8 or 9-7 and either way we miss the playoffs.

McDaniels would have run Elway out of Denver because McDouchebag wants all the credit and having an elite quarterback means that he would have to share the credit. Joshie would rather try to win with a Matt Cassel or Kyle Orton because then everyone can see how "smart" he is.

11 is not enough. I say 13. We beat Indy, Philly, Oak, KC, SD and Wash with Elway.

Gosh I don't know. While I love John, we have to be honest and admit it wasn't until the arrival of TD and Gary Zimmerman and Co. that this team dominated.

In John's early years when we made the playoffs consistently, our D was pretty good, and John bailed the O out. This team this year went downhill on both sides of the ball.

I voted that he might be good for one or two more games.
