Default NFL Offensive Player of the Year

Much to debate here. There is the obvious three in Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Brett Favre (lots of you deserve some crow on him!), and I can certainly see the argument for those three. All of them are having great seasons and are on teams with a combined 32-1 record. So, while I know it isn't likely and maybe outside the normal thought patter, I'm going to suggest someone else for OPOY.

Chris Johnson!!!

At this point he has just under 1400 yards rushing. That 127 yards per game and 6.4 yards per carry! He also has another 300 yards receiving. His 10 total TDs are not eye popping, but nothing to sneeze at either. Here is the thing though, he is on pace to rush for over 2000 yards and he may do that without hitting 300 carries!!!

He has had 7 games with 125 yards rushing or more! 4, 2 TD games. 4 times he has run for at least 150. Finally, he hasn't run for less than 128 yards in the last couple of months!!! He is as hot as anyone in the league right now. Early season questions regarding who the best RB in the league this year are pretty much answered. Most would tell you that they'd take Adrian Peterson (I would) over Chris Johnson, but Chris Johnson is sure making it a tough decision.

So, would 2000+ rushing yards, 500 receiving yards, and 15-18 total TDs be enough to win the OPOY award? Most years, it would and quite easily... but with Manning, Favre, and Brees lighting it up, it probably won't be enough.

Thoughts? And who do you have for OPOY at this point?

I like how you make it seem like Chris Johnson isn't an obvious potential choice for OPOTY. He could hit 2000 yards, man. I think if he unless he doesn't hit 1900 yard, he'll get OPOTY while Brees/Manning/Favre gets MVP.

That's possible... but keep in mind the media's love affair with Brett Favre. He's on pace to end up with a 30+ TD and less than 10 INTs. Plus they'll probably end up around 14-2. Then Manning with 4500 yards and 35-40 TDs. Brees, undefeated and 35 TDs and close to 5000 yards. I agree that it would be hard to pass on Chris Johnson with 2500 total yards... but if they're 9-7 and out of the playoffs...

For the NFL, I'm not sure yet.

But there's no question Denver's MVP has got to be Jay Cutler.

Not just for this season because he's going to get Denver a much much better draft pick, but in the offseason as well because his douchebaggery gave us multpile draft picks also.

If Chris Johnson keeps this up, he will win it. If not, its probably Brees.

If the Titans make the playoffs Johnson is a shoe in, but I think its going to be either Brees or Favre, what I think will happen is one will win MVP and the other will be POY.

It's got to be CJ.

MVP will go to one of the QB's, but OPOTY? Easy choice.

favre is playing good but hes not even the best QB in the game right now, much less offensive player of year. brees is going nuts however, probably my favorite QB as he is generally overlooked in the "elite" category.

I am going to go with Brees for OPOTY also, what he is doing every week is amazing

MVP, I hate to say this but there is no chance it isn't Favre and he deserves it

he completely lifted that team to another level and is having probably his best season ever

Brees.

And it's hard to see how anyone can beat the Saints right now.

If CJ rushes for over 2000 yards and if he brakes Dickerson's all time rushing record, then he should by default get OPOTY.

Brees, Favre and Manning can duke it out for MVP.

If Favre isn't on this vikings team they aren't 10-1, in fact I dunno if they are 6-5. Their D is good, but TJack sucks and they didn't have another plan going into the season. That alone puts Favre in the MVP running in my mind.

Those are the Top QB's by QB Rating.

Favre #2 in Rtg, #2 in completion percentage Best TD/INT percentage. Yea he don't put up huge numbers. But perception of QB's is what ESPN tells 90% of footballs fans what to think.

im aware of his effect on the team, they made it to the playoffs without him, though obviously not in near dominant fashion, and while he deserves consideration, brees and chris johnson are playing the best at their positions right now. johnson is on pace to destroy literally every running back and yards record ever held. brees is putting up points hardly ever seen in the NFL before against great teams.

I understand what you are saying but it's hard to know (in fact it's almost completely impossible to know) what the Vikes' record is with Rosenfels starting under center (isn't Sage Rosenfels the back up QB?).

Well, we have quite a few good contenders.
Chris Johnson is having a phenomenal season. He could at this pace run for 2000 yards. Remarkable!

Brett Favre. It pains me to say it, but he's also having an awesome season
Drew Brees. What can I say. The guy is an offensive weapon all in his own.

I think Favre most likely gets MVP, but as far as OPOY I'd say Brees, then Johnson though it could go etheir way. I'll be happy either way. Brees because his team's record. Johnson if the Titans make the play-offs
