Default The Rest of the AFC West - surprisingly pretty good!

This conference is actually looking pretty tough now. If Denver wasn't lording over the AFC NFL, they would notice some pretty interesting things.

Manning leads the league in TD's with 16 and an amazing 0 interceptions. You know who is number 2? Our beloved Phyllis Rivers with 11 TD's and 2 interceptions.

Rivers is also second in completion percentage and Qb rating, also behind Manning, and fourth in yards per pass (8.4) behind only Manning (9.4), Vick (9.2) and Aaron Rodgers (8.7).

McCoy has really helped get Rivers back to the level he can play at.

Alex Smith, on the other hand, is pretty anemic.

He is 26th in yards per play. He makes most of this throws (over half) to running backs and most go around 5 yards. The ONLY think Alex Smith is good at is not turning the ball over. He basically plays ultra-safe. And with a good defense and special teams, you will win a lot of games, especially against bad teams like the ones the AFC West plays this season.

Which brings me to my next point

The KC Chiefs have the number one scoring defense in the league. They are seventh in yards, but points are what matters. They are 9th in interceptions and 2nd in fumble recoveries. In fact the lead the entire NFL in turnover differential with +9.

Now I will say they have faced the Giants and the Jags, who are two of the worst offenses in the league, so their stats are pretty skewed. But they did shut down Philly in Philly. And they held Dallas to 17 points and they are the 8th best scoring offense, so much of it is good defense.

So there are some interesting things to consider.

I didn't mention the Raiders because the Raiders suck it.

I'm actually excited and I welcome the competition. It will better prepare us for the playoffs.

Yeah while neither team is anywhere close to our level it has been impressive.

KC can't see us in a shootout.

Chargers can score but I think our defensive backfield is too good to let them score a bunch

I agree. The NFL is better with a good AFC West IMO. Even the Raiders being more competitive makes for a better NFL because of the stories behind the franchises.

The divisions oscillate between good and bad so quickly. A few years back the NFC West was by far the worst division, last year the AFC West was bad apart from the broncos.

And that's why I thought people on the OM were being idiots when they dismissed Rivers as no longer being an elite talent.

I think it's more fun when they have a little hope. Like the Chiefs in '97.

Chargers are back based on Gates and Royal playing like he did his rookie season with Denver. They did get one of our coaches to replace Norv so that is worth a few extra victories. SD has lost when they should have won with the Titans game.

KC is going to have much more trouble with us. Good defense and they need to be with their offense. Short passes going for 1st downs keeps their opponents off the field. We will make Smith work much harder then he wants. 8 in the box should be normal facing this team. Slow first half but we will beat them by 2 scores at least.

Raiders have already come into Denver and sucked but are better then last season. That isn't good enough.

The best thing is Reid and Smith will keep the Chiefs well outside of a pick for a franchise QB but never good enough to do anything in the postseason.

The Chargers are "back" because McCoy has completely changed the offense to fit the strengths of Rivers, not because of Royal or Gates. They're spreading the ball around everywhere. Royal, Gates, Woodhead, Allen, Floyd, even Mathews. Everyone is getting in the mix but Rivers is carrying this team right now.

The defense has regressed though and there are still a number of holes on the team. It's going to take another good draft or two before to fully rebuild the team from the shape AJ Smith left it in.

A better division will keep the Broncos motivated and playoff seeding competitive. Even with the Ravens loss last year, I worry about the broncos taking it easy week at the end of the regular season and losing their edge in the playoffs.

As a Broncos fan I agree with this sentiment. However as a football fan, it is more fun to watch football when the Chiefs and Raiders are good. I'd lump in the Chargers but nobody actually gives a rats ass about them.

Here is to the Chargers, Chiefs and Raiders all finishing 8-8..well, let the Raiders continue the failure of 11 years and go 7-9. No playoffs, crazy hope for their fanbase (except Chargers who are used to better than .500) and yet their draft pick is middle of the pack...perfect!

The Chiefs opponents combined record is 3-13

Not long ago it was a bad Chiefs team that won 10 games and the division because they played an extremely easy schedule

Not to rain on their parade, they are obviously much better this year

But its hard to say who is better between the Chiefs and Chargers since the Chiefs are playing the worst teams in the league with the exception being a mediocre Dallas team

This Denver team is proven.

Get back to me when you're 15-0 in your last 15 regular season games.

It was incredibly satisfying knocking them out in their stadium. Still, I would rather not have to go on the road twice (now 3 times most likely for a wild card team) and be forced to get wins in hostile environments.

Again, answer the question:

If your life depended on picking a winner between the chiefs and broncos, who do you pick?

Now shut the **** up and go back to your own board

I actually think the same. It's a QB driven league, and they clearly have a potent offense and a very good QB. They probably should be 4-0.

There's only really one way KC is a dangerous team, and it is if they have a Baltimore Ravens 2000 level defense. I think most people agree that is not the caliber of defense that KC has.

They have beaten those teams by nearly as many points as your team has scored total. Just saying.

Exactly. You either have an upper tier QB, or you don't in this league. Alex Smith isn't going to force the balls into tight windows and will a team to victory. Rivers has shown that ability. Smith is a really solid game manger, nothing more, nothing less. Like I've said from the get go, he's a more mobile, less accurate Brian Griese. Rivers on the other hand, although rebounding from a couple of **** years is elite when he's at his best.
