Default Giants Sign Broncos's PS CB Johnson

I'm told the #Giants have signed rookie CB Dominique Johnson from the #Broncos practice squad. Tall CB, Senior Bowl participant. Has upside.

This is what I was worried about when we cut Jack Williams. It's great that Ty Law might be marginally better than JMFW, but at least he was young AND had made some quality plays for us this year. Yes, he got picked on against Baltimore and Washington destroyed us, but if you've watched the Ravens at all this year, JMFW is hardly the first to have that happen to him.

Anyway, people tried to justify the move earlier by saying that we had young developing CBs on our PS. We just lost one of the good ones. Now we're left with FIVE 30+ year-olds in our secondary and just Alphonso and Tony Carter on our current roster. Not good!

This is a concern. My thoughts were that if we had an injury we can sign Johnson or the kid from Florida St. off the practice squad. Looks like one down.

Looks like they worked out 14 players yesterday and decided to sign Johnson (without a workout). Interesting.

War Room analysis
Strengths: Is tall. Has quick feet, can accelerate to full speed rapidly and has good straight-line speed. Shows the playing speed to run with nearly any receiver on a deep route. Has good ball skills and has shown the ability to reach out and break up passes.

Weaknesses: Lacks flexibility and agility. Is slow to read and react to the quarterback. Is not a consistent tackler.

Bottom line: Johnson began his college career at Missouri before transferring to Jackson State, where he started for his final two seasons. He is a tall, well-built cornerback who is going to impress at the NFL Combine. However, his poor instincts may cause a team to draft him too high

He was a very high quality UDFA that we signed. He was raw, but had all he measurables, especially the part that we lack in our secondary after Champ--he had height.

People considered him a mid-to-late round draft pick. If you were into the draft at the time, you would have seen his name around on a lot of the top 15 DB lists. I was very excited when we signed him, and now I'm equally displeased that we lost him.

It might turn out to be nothing though, so who knows.

You know, he was on the practice squad. Something tells me we're not losing an integral piece here...

Yeah, players really never develop into anything besides what they were when they came out of college.

the odds are severely stacked against them, especially a player who sat on the PS for 8 weeks without anyone looking at him.

Giants are facing us in a few games... makes sense.

Also this f'ing sucks. This dude had good upside and great size for a CB.

If McD is like his mentor we're going to have to get used to the idea that a lot of our depth will be veteran 30+ players over young talent with upside.

The Pats have managed a tremendous balance regarding this over the past 10 years. We'll just have to wait and see if McD can do the same.

True, and this is a good point.

I think this is another case of how much I disagree with McD&the system&his overall football philosophy. Belichick has achieved great results with this methodology, and so it's definitely worth "waiting and seeing" on, but at the same time it's not the ONLY way to have success in this league.

I thought I had gotten over this since TC, but clearly I haven't. Anyway, thanks for reminding me.

Somehow, the Pats have maintained good team balance even while carrying a ****load of old-ass players.

Is it just me or if he was so good to warrant worrying about why was he on the PS in the first place?

Sorry wasn't trying to criticize but if he was that important to the team it just seems they would have signed him to protect him. Such is life with the PS its a risk.

Same thing kind of happened with Dominik Hixon. Broncos cut him with full intentions to put him on the practice squad but NY grabbed him.

Agreed, it's the risk of PS. But your 2nd sentence proves my own misgivings, at least to me, because Hixon is someone I'd want on my team--solid deep threat receiver and excellent return man. Yet was deemed PS worthy--for a whole host of other circumstances, but nevertheless he turned out to be a good player, one that the Broncos had invested in.
