Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders suffered a torn biceps tendon and will require season-ending surgery, a team source said.

It's the latest in a torrent of injuries that has swept through the Colts, especially the team's secondary.

In addition to Sanders, Colts cornerback Kelvin Hayden is expected to miss up to a month with a knee injury, Colts coach Jim Caldwell said Friday.

Also, Colts cornerback Marlin Jackson tore his anterior cruciate ligament in practice Wednesday and already has been placed on the season-ending injured reserve list. A team source said Jackson tore his ACL on the final play of practice and is expected to have surgery next week.

As if that weren't enough, Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Thursday that will sideline him two to three weeks, a team source said. Gonzalez, who has missed most of the season, suffered a recent setback in practice that led to surgery to clean out loose particles in his right knee.

But the most damaging blow may be the injury to Sanders, one of the team's best defensive players.

In Sunday's win over San Francisco, Sanders hurt what the Colts said was his elbow. But another person friendly with Sanders said it was his biceps tendon, though an exact specification of the injury could come later today.

But Caldwell confirmed Friday that Sanders does "need something done," and he would know in the next 24 hours how much time his Pro Bowl safety would miss.

Sanders spent Thursday meeting with noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Alabama, going over the injury and how much damage the Colts safety could do to it if he were to continue playing.

Sanders already had missed the first five games of this season after undergoing offseason knee surgery. He returned to play at St. Louis and against San Francisco before injuring his biceps tendon in the latest injury that will end his season.

The Colts signed veteran defensive end Josh Thomas to replace Jackson on the active roster. Thomas played with the Colts from 2004 through 2008, starting in 12 of 68 appearances, and was credited with 172 tackles, including six sacks.

He's starting to make Boss Bailey look like Cal Ripken.

That's a shame. Sanders is an amazing player.

But again he can't seem to have any luck with injuries. Colts secondary looking thinner the closer the playoffs get.

Hate to see any player injured but this just opens the door alittle wider for the Broncos

His playstyle leads to injuries. He plays Balls to the wall, throwing his body every which way.

Only one injury on the Colts could truly DQ them from the playoffs at this point in the season...and that's Manning. While Sanders is a great player. He missed most of the season, so his presence (or lack thereof) was not a factor in their 7-0 start.

The Colts are a solid team, but their injuries are mounting. With CB Marlin Jackson out too, their secondary is thin.

Sanders injury won't keep them out of the playoffs, but it will keep them out of the super bowl. Manning owes his ring to Sanders, who basically dragged Manning to a super bowl win.

it is sad that Indy is getting hit by the injury bug, never like to see guys get injured, but this does give better opportunities to Denver the rest of the season and in the head to head matchup in a few weeks.

Their soft schedule helped them to 7-0 more than Sanders would have. This is a major blow to the Colts D. Especially with a pair of games against Houston up soon. Houston has been playing them close the past few years and their offense is looking pretty dangerous these days.

Sucks. I live in Sanders hometown and he does a lot for the community that he just doesn't have to. Above and beyond. Good guy, good player.

I really like Sanders. Sorry to hear it, but like Hotrod said, anything that opens the door a little wider for us...

He missed their first 5 games and the Colts still won, but they really didn't play anybody either. These injuries will hurt them no doubt. They will still probably mop up since their division is weak but an offense will be licking their chops when they see Indy on the schedule.

Cover 2 extraordinaire. Their defense has changed. They've been fine without him, but their injuries are piling up.

In other words, take the Texans to cover (Man-Goblin is not responsible for gambling losses).
