Default Broncos LB Williams might get to Pro Bowl this time

FRANK SCHWAB
THE GAZETTE
ENGLEWOOD • This time last year, Denver Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams was thinking Pro Bowl. Now, he doesn’t care.

Williams started to consider the possibility of his first Pro Bowl last year, but missed some time with an injury and didn’t make it. He vowed not to think about it this year.

“I think I was on good pace last year and was all excited about it,” Williams said. “I just decided to play and whatever happens, happens.”

The irony is this could finally be his year. Williams is on pace for 128 tackles, but he also has added some big plays.

He has two sacks, a half sack behind his career best in a season. He already has tied a career best with two forced fumbles.

Williams said his goal is to make more big plays in the last two months of the season.

Williams is the only linebacker who stays on the field in all situations for the Broncos, who have the top-ranked defense in the NFL. And team success could be what finally gets Williams enough Pro Bowl votes.

“You don’t want to be the guy on a bad defense,” Williams said. “I’d give away personal productivity for the productivity of the defense.”

Williams said he likes the versatility of being the weakside inside linebacker in the new 3-4 scheme. He lines up in different spots, and can drop back in coverage or rush the quarterback based on the play. He took to it immediately, and others noticed.

“He looks very comfortable,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “There’s not a lot of hesitation that you might see from people who are part of a new scheme. It’s obvious he has the instincts, it’s obvious he worked hard to get comfortable quickly.”

He's finally having a Pro Bowl year. For awhile, I was worried he wasn't going to live up to his potential. However, it's all about Nolan and his ability to use DJ's talents wisely.

I've been trying to remember to vote every day. Hopefully he can make some big plays in primetime to get his name out there more. Would love to see him go to the Pro Bowl

The new system seems to be suiting him better than his last role in the middle, which was a disaster. He's no Pro Bowl player, but he's made some plays.

DJ is a chaser. If he's got the right guys around and in front of him, he can be a nice athlete out there. You just don't want him trying to diagnose things or relying on any instincts because he'll get in trouble.

We'll see where he ends up. If he's not a liability like last season, I'll be happy. Anything more than that is just icing.

His current, true value lies somewhere in the middle of Pro Bowler and this.

But give him credit. He's never b****ed about changing positions every year (in public, and of course he did get paid). He's never been able to develop into a single position and master it, but he's still produced.

I'm looking forward to seeing him grow in this system, in this position for a few years.

Spin spin spin ... do you ever admit when you're wrong? Ever?

And in yet another mistake of yours, DJ was not a "liability" last season. In fact he was playing at a consensus Pro Bowl level before the season-ending injury in Cleveland.

Any of this ring any bells?

He needs to do more than have career best for 2009 in sacks and forced fumbles. He is unknown outside of Denver and maybe the AFC West. We would have to constantly vote for him just to help him out on the popular vote. Hopefully the opponents are noticing him also.

I really like this Frank Schwab for the springs gazzette. He writes pretty unbiased stuff.

I'd frankly rather see us move him for a real ILB, but at least he's not in a spot where he's going to be out of position as often. (It appears.)

Again, he's fast... and a good tackler. It's better than just sucking. As long as we can hide his flaws in a sytem and he's got quality players on both sides and in front of him, he's an asset.

Right now, that appears to be the case.

I'm hoping no Broncos attend the Pro Bowl because they are too busy prepping for the Super Bowl.

Um, he was referring to when he came back from injury...and was a liability.

C'mon, Buff.

Okay, points taken.

I was reacting more to his eternal dislike of DJ than that one phrase though.

I don't think DJ is in the pro bowl yet with this season. Still a ways to go though. As of right now, Ray Lewis is having another impact year. H2H his defense outperformed Denver's last week. David Harris is also having an excellent campaign for the jets. He's beating DJ is tackles and sacks, plus one INT. Kirk Morrison and Demico Ryan are still in DJ's way right now. If he can double his output from now until the end of the season though, he's got a chance.
