Default Eagles missing Dawkins

Article about the problems the Eagles are having on defense, particularly at the LB position, which are compounded by the loss of Dawkins.

Bottom line, if McDermott had a Dawkins ... to buttress a makeshift middle linebacking rotation, we might not have seen a trade for Witherspoon. This isn't a bad Eagles defense, but it is young in spots. With Bradley going down, Dawkins' absence as a tackler, leader, and patroller-over-the-middle has resonated way beyond what management envisioned when it calculated it could afford to let Dawk test the free-agent market.

Oh, well. Their loss is our gain.

They're still one of the top 5 defenses in the league, probably actually top 3. I don't think they're missing him on the field that much but leadershipwise, sure.

I think they miss having a RB break off 7+ypc more!

His absence is exacerbating their cluster**** at the LB position. It's a "good" defense but their overall numbers are exaggerated b/c they've played one of the easiest schedules in the league. Outside of NO they've played 4 of the worst teams in the league.

Yeah, but they also played one of the best offenses in the history of the nfl which scews their numbers.

You are referring to the Raiders, right?

They can't have him back. I hope the Broncos can find a way to keep him around after he's done playing. He seems like he'd be a hell of a coach if he wants to be.

When Zach Miller rumbled down the field on that 86 yard TD reception, one could clearly see the Eagles were missing Brian Dawkins. If Wolverine was still there, Miller probably would not have made it past the 50 yard line on that catch.

We kind of miss him when he's not on the field too.

I am sure their fans and his old teammates miss him a whole lot, but in reality the benefit to our team is much greater than the loss to theirs. They are still able to play very good defense without him but here his value is almost immeasurable. I think overall he could not be in a better situation this year. I'm ecstatic he's a Bronco and that we might even have a shot at getting him a ring.

Yet they're 15th in the NFL for points allowed.

Being 4th in yards given up doesn't mean **** if you give up points.

They're a good D but not top 5. Their linebackers suck. The one good team they played (Saints) exposed them. Their other 4 opponents were among the worst teams in the league: Carolina, KC, Tampa, Oakland.

The points allowed stat has a lot of other variables like starting field position and the type of offense you're facing though, so it's not really a good measure as to how good a defense actually is.

They've played the....

Sun. 13 @ Panthers 1:00 PM W 38-10
Sun. 20 SAINTS 1:00 PM L 22-48
Sun. 27 CHIEFS 1:00 PM 94 WYSP/610 WIP W 34-14
October
DAY DATE OPPONENT TIME (ET) RADIO TV/RECAP
BYE 4 BYE BYE
Sun. 11 BUCCANEERS 1:00 PM 94 WYSP/610 WIP W 33-14
Sun. 18 @ Raiders 4:05 PM L 9-13

Four of the worst offenses in the ENTIRE NFL and one really, really good one (which did really good against them).

10 points to Panthers
14 points to Chiefs
14 points to Buccaneers
13 points to Raiders
48 points to Saints

Panthers average 17 a game (24th) - Eagles gave up a TD less than average.
Chiefs average 16.3 a game (25th) - Eagles gave up almost a FG less than average.
Buccaneers average 14.8 a game (27th) - Eagles gave up slightly less than average.
Raiders average 10.3 a game (31st) - Eagles gave up almost a FG more than average.
Saints average 38.4 a game (1st) - Eagles gave up a TD and FG more than average.

Oh they play the Redskins this week so their stats will get some help - 13.2 a game (29th).

The Eagles have a nice defense but it's not a top one atm.

So by your logic, if the Eagles have an epically terrible special teams day, giving the Redskins the ball at the 1 yard line 10 times but hold them to 10 field goals or 30 points, the Eagles defense must be worse than average because they gave up 30 points vs 13.2?
