Default Kyle Orton named AFC Offensive Player of the Week

http://blog.denverbroncos.com/denver...fensive-award/

http://www.milehighreport.com/2009/1...-afc-offensive

Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton will be named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for games played during the fifth week (Oct. 11-12) of the 2009 season, the National Football League informed the Broncos on Tuesday.

Orton's selection as his conference's Player of the Week is the first such award of his five-year NFL career.

The quarterback was recognized by the NFL after completing 35-of-48 (72.9%) passes for 330 yards with two touchdowns and one interception (Hail Mary pass attempt) for a 96.7 rating in Denver's 20-17 overtime win against New England on Sunday. He led two touchdown drives of at least 10 plays and 90 yards against the Patriots, including a 12-play, 98-yard drive late in the fourth quarter that tied the game and eventually forced overtime.

Orton's 35 completions were a career high and tied for the third-highest single-game total in the NFL this year. His 72.9 completion percentage also was a personal best and marked the second-highest game total in Broncos history among players with at least 45 pass attempts.

A former standout at Purdue University, Orton is the Broncos' 44th AFC Offensive Player of the Week winner since the award was initiated by the NFL in 1984.

Would have been 105.3 without the interception.

A good example of why QB rating is a lame statistic IMHO.

Orton suc... er wait... dude's a pretty good QB. I'm glad the glove is off, his throws on Sunday were great. Tight spirals all day. For some reason I think we are going to see more shots down field against SD this weekend than we've seen.

Congrats to Orton, well done, grab your self a Jack drink.

To be honest we should have put Brandstater or Simms out there to throw the Hail Mary.

In reality, this happens so often (it seems) that INTs on the last play of the half really shouldn't be counted against the QB rating.... completions, of course, should be counted toward the QB rating.

You know you all would play your azzes off for him too if he was your QB! I think he now knows what he has in this offense, knows the system, and will continue to wreak hell all over the league....he's just got to work on not getting sacked out of FG range.

Orton is so good he pump faked to Moreno before he threw it to him in the Dallas game just to give the defense a chance!

Eh, I disagree for this reason. I don't think that Orton is the type of guy who would get nervous over preserving an interception streak and be overly conservative. But strange things happen. I am glad that streak got broken in a way that wasn't Orton's fault.

I don't think an interception on a Hail Mary should even count as an interception in the stats. Stats are supposed to be indicative of some useful measurement, and treating a Hail Mary int as being the same as a non-Hail Mary int makes no sense at all. The two are totally different.

Just as kneel-down lost yards shouldn't count against a QB's rushing yards, neither should Hail Mary ints count as ints. Both of those are situations where a unique occurrence pollutes an otherwise useful statistical category.
