Default Why does Fields line up a yard from the LOS?

Anyone else notice this during the games? I don't know enough about the nuances of technique to discern a particular reason for it, but Ronald Fields seems to consistently line up farther from the LOS than any of the other DL and LBs. Does anyone know why?

Well, it's better than lining up in the neutral zone

Probably to disguise which "A" gap he is pesponsible for. Mabye gives him a better angle to get at either?

He's so fast at hitting the gap that he has to start a yard off

it's called 'The Ronald Fields Rule', implemented via executive order by Roger Goodell.

Probably because he's so fat, if he started at the LoS he'd be offsides.

Fields got some negative press on this board in the offseason for basically being a castoff second stringer from the 9ers. This article made a different prediction and has a lot of interesting details I didn't see anywhere else:

I clearly remember that there were several members hereon who bagged on him ad infinitum......

I think that constant "bagging". pio%%ing and moaning by those "experts" turned a lot of poeple off and is responsible for the continuing disgust at some of the most vociferous baggers......

I agree with others who have stated that the reason for Field's deeper positioning is probably because it allows him to adjust to the play better (gap protection).

IMO, it makes the G come to you at NT, allowing the ILB's to get an immediate read on any stunts/pulling linemen. Also if he thinks it's a pass he can "pick" who he rushes, which should allow the ILB an open rush lane IF they are coming.
Our outside rush already has the opponents T in full retreat, why not open holes between O-linemen EVERYWHERE!

That makes sense...essentially forcing the OL to show their hand by lining up a little away from the LOS...I'll try and watch for that in the game on Sunday.

Fields was getting some props on NFLN today from Theisman, it was pretty sweet. He was showing how on the first play of the game he just tossed Gurode aside and made the tackle in the backfield.

I'm very happy with the big guy Also Marcus Thomas is playing the nose surprisingly well too! I always thought he was more of a pass rushing guy.

Just keep him eating cheeseburgers and keep the lbs on for the battle at the NT position. He has pleasantly surprised me and has been doing a good job at the point of attack.
