Default That was soooo last year .....

Chargers starting to feel a little heat and give a little bulletin board material.

http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stori...ailout/?sports

SAN DIEGO – All through last November and into December, a strand of the thread of hope the Chargers hung onto was the thought that they would get another shot at the Denver Broncos at season's end.

Not this year.

There will likely be no chance at a December miracle in 2009, and the Chargers know it.

Their next game, on Oct. 19 against the AFC West-leading Broncos, begins a run of three straight games against division opponents and a span of seven weeks in which the Chargers will play five AFC West games and wrap up division play Nov. 29.

“This is the bulk of our season coming up,” tight end Antonio Gates said Tuesday. “ ... That's it. At that point, there is no way we're going to play them again and make nothing up like we did last year.”

The Chargers' epic comeback from three games down to win the West in 2008 featured three December victories over their pathetic AFC West counterparts.

Well, not only do the Broncos appear anything but pathetic – at 4-0, they have the league's ninth-ranked offense and second-ranked defense – but the Chargers will play them this month and then Nov. 22 at Denver.

“Our window is a lot smaller than it was last year based on how the opportunity presents itself,” Gates said. “It presents itself early in the year. We don't have a chance to make it up late in the year.”

So while it is only the season's fourth week, Chargers players acknowledge there is a sense of urgency brought on by the schedule.

“We have this stretch with the next three against division opponents, and we're done with the division early,” running back LaDainian Tomlinson said. “We know this stretch is critical for us. We're going to have to play good football. We're going to have to get at our peak in a hurry.”

For now, the Chargers are just two games back and play Denver twice. While the Chargers are off Sunday, the Broncos will be hosting the New England Patriots.

“If the Patriots take care of business and win, we can be playing for first place again,” Gates said. “That's what I'm looking forward to. Even if Denver beats the Patriots, we're playing for first place, because we beat Denver once and we get a chance to play them again and beat them again.

“At this point you can control your own destiny.”

Just not for as long this year.

Defense meets longer

Two days after looking lost much of the night and allowing the Steelers 497 yards and 38 points, the Chargers defense met – as a whole and by position – for almost three hours Tuesday.

“We took a good look at some things,” defensive end Luis Castillo said.

Coordinator Ron Rivera addressed the entire defense, showing certain plays and making players accountable. Then they split into position groups.

The defensive line, then linebackers and then defensive backs emerged from those meetings an hour or more after the offensive groups had finished.

“It was long,” safety Clinton Hart said. “But we needed it. It was definitely worth it.”

The Chargers defense continues to talk about not having played within the plays that were called as their main problem Sunday. They talked Tuesday about being accountable and trusting one another on the field.

“When you give up 500 yards you've got to regroup and then you've got to have a wake-up call,” linebacker Kevin Burnett said.

The Chargers had only meetings Tuesday. They have short practices Wednesday and Thursday before taking the rest of the week off.

Nuts 'n' Bolts

– Linebacker Antwan Applewhite, out the past three games with a hamstring injury, said Tuesday he hopes to be back in time for the Denver game.

– The Chargers' average time of possession is 26:44, 28th in the league.

– Gates has nine third-down receptions. All nine have converted first downs.

– The Chargers' 34 points off turnovers are sixth-most in the league.

Funny Chargers talking about holding players accountable, and not executing the plays, and being out of position, sounds like our defense last yr.

Sometimes things are just unfixable. They lost Jammal Williams and that made everyone behind him worst. Linebackers not used to being blocked are now busy shedding olineman instead of taking on rbs or getting to the passer.

I just watched some of the pitt game, and the Chargers defense doesn't look good at all. I saw guys getting pushed around all over the field.

It's good to see the Chargers looking ahead on their schedule even if they're saying the right things. They're a soft team.

They are reminding me a lot of the Denver 2007 team, the defense hadn't completely collapsed yet, but there were signs of impending doom (lots of yards given up, inability to hold other teams to FGs instead of TDs)

I was thinking the same thing. Plus, it's like they're taking credit for what they did last year. That was a full on collapse by the Broncos. As proud as the Chargers sound of their 8-8 record, the chain of events that occured that allowed them to make the playoffs (and concurrently paved the way for the Broncos' organizational transition) were beyond unlikely, and highly improbable.

I love the fact that they have become a finesse team... Being physical and taking it right to them has given them fits so far.

If Gates had confidence in his own team he wouldn't be worried about how we do against the Patriots.

Their defense gave up almost 180 yards rushing to the Squealers and they can't even run the ball.
They also know they can't bank on the Broncos losing 7 running backs again either.

SD is kinda in trouble. The Pats game is nice but not critical as it's lower down in the tie breakers than common games

As long as we beat SD somewhere. SD has already lost to BALT and PITTS we need to beat one of those or have SD lose to CLEV or CINCY. Pretty good odds we beat one or they lose one.

As long as we beat up OAK and KC and win one against SD we should be in great shape

Broncos are a different team this year, so Im hoping we dont have another callapse like last year. If Bucky is ready by that SD game, our run game should have fun with that D

Losing their NT and not having an RB that can take a pounding really hurts SD. Sproles can still take a screen the distance but he can't carry for 20+ times a game.

Rivera went from being a hot HC prospect to just another DC.

Rivera might be going back to LB coach at this rate! Though I'm putting the blame mostly on the players not executing rather than Rivera. Yeah, it's tough without Jamal Williams but the d-line and linebackers look like they're out there on roller skates.

The window is closing and Sandy Eggo is gonna have to go into rebuild mode this next offseason IF they don't make the playoffs this year.

New HC and staff, etc...

Losing the two most important players on your defense will do that. Merriman is not even close to 100% out there. He should take a seat on the bench and let English play until he's truly ready to go.

Jammer, Cason and Weddle are the only guys on the defense playing well right now.

Castillo has been a pleasant surprise and overall has stepped up his play this season. Cesaire is a nice backup/rotational guy but has no business starting. Stephen Cooper plays well but has been way too inconsistent so far. Kevin Burnett looked like the second coming of Ray Lewis in pre-season but looks like a bust so far. Shaun Phillips just turns invisible without Merriman on the other side (as we saw last year). I think they wanted to cut Clinton Hart but was hoping he could be a sufficient band aid for one more year until someone like Kevin Ellison is ready to go. He'd be a decent backup but everyone has known for the past two years that he shouldn't be starting. Cromartie is the most overrated corner in the league. I don't know what's happened to him since his breakout season two years ago. Cason should be starting over him with Cromartie going to nickel.

I expect Rivers to light the Broncos up.

But Sproles/LT will be doing nothing

Seeing Norv go would be worth it.

Okay, seriously, if that happens, I can see the defense going through an overhaul but the offense is still in great shape despite the o-line troubles. I don't see next year being a "rebuild" year a la the Chiefs. Not even close.

I'd love to see Wade come back as DC. The Cowboys are struggling and the writing is on the wall for Wade. I don't think he'll get another HC gig but we'll see. He's an AJ Smith guy and the defense just really hasn't played the same since he left.

There's no way Norv would stay on being demoted to OC but Norv as OC with Wade as DC would be a great combo with a strong willed HC in charge. Though, actually I think the Chargers have a good OC in waiting in Rob Chudzinski (TE, Asst HC). He might even be a sleeper candidate for HC.

This is all way premature though. As much as the Norv hate is going around right now, his track record here suggests he'll get things going late in the season.

You can talk about the play calls all you want, but when you don't win your one-on-one matchups it doesn't matter. The SD defense gets pushed backwards.
