That's why he should have brought several cities to the table. Dealing with the IOC is dirty business. It's all about the bribes.

Honestly though, where would you rather spend 3 weeks, Chicago or Rio?

Rio gets the 2016 summer games. Good for them. Brazil has never hosted the games

Either that, or give a half-decent pitch for Chicago. I don't know if you read the speeches to the IOC, but man, they were pi$$ poor.

A Heapin' Helpin' of Irony Alert: Here's Axelrod's take on it. :

Top White House adviser David Axelrod says "politics" played a key role in the International Olympic Committee's decision to reject President Obama's appeal in support of Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Olympics.

It has little to do with the presentations. Samaranch led the IOC when its members were getting fat on bribes. The fact that restrictions were imposed from the SLC games works against the US and so did the fact that Samaranch's home country had a bid that his son was involved with. And thats on top of whatever other resentment might have existed. I think most know this and I think thats why it wasnt certain that Obama would go...its all for the sake of appearance because everyone knows wheels turn that are beyond anyones control with the IOC.

Tell the truth: If Obama jumped into a raging river and saved a drowning kid you would criticize his back stroke.

No, though i have no doubt you'd start the 'Obama for International Swimming Hall of Fame' movement replete with poster of Obama first parting Lake Michigan, then levitating through it.

Wow and that's with the President going all the way out there to lobby? What a rebuke of Obama by the Olympic Committee. They must have been turned off by the Obama's feeling they should get involved.

It comes down to the fact other countries govt willing to spend. RIO will spend more money then Chicago probably would, therefore its the better choice.

They can't be much bigger than Chicago's crime problems. The mayor can't possible be worse than Blagojevic.

Obama tried to play the politics game with the IOC by going himself. He obviously felt that a quality speech was not needed, only the presence of a sitting President of the United States, which would bring the IOC to their knees in adoration.

I agree that SLC's corruption and the Atlanta bombing likely had sway and Samaranch went for the 'i veel not be around mooch longer...' card. But still, Olympics have come to America in the past even as teh IOC was rife with corruption. I know it's hard for some to believe, but maybe the Chicago proposal just wasn't good enough.

Would not surprise me if Barry jumped into a ragging river to save a drowning kid and tried to do the back stroke. There is not time for that **** Barry this is freestyle time baby.

Actually, I'm not really wild about the guy as president. So far he seems to be all talk. But you seem to be obsessed with him since the day he was sworn in, like some kind of holy crusade.

No, actually, i've considered him a tool since BEFORE he was sworn in, because I took the time to find out what he DID, rather than what he SAID. So did a lot of people who provided ample evidence that he'd be 'all talk', as you say. Trouble is you jammed fingers into your ears, closed your eyes tightly, and muttered hope and change slogans when you prolly should've been a more informed voter.

This story is an example of making everything political. I am not sure if it makes a ton of money, but anytime the US can host it, its a net positive in terms of world image.... I guess I dont have a problem with a pres making a pitch either. Chicago is a bit obvious, but I woudl take Chicago over Rio.

Doesnt this mean that Denver now has a decent shot at the 2018 Winter games?
