Default Reality check

Didn't see this Burger Bell special posted...

Are the Broncos for real? The NFL Blog Network breaks down each of the seven teams that started the season 3-0.

What they’ve accomplished: The Broncos are one of the most intriguing of the seven teams to go undefeated thus far. Many around the league thought it would take Denver all season to win three games after a tumultuous offseason. But the Broncos have been outstanding in the early going. No, they haven't conquered world-beaters as they defeated Cincinnati (on a miraculous last-second play), Cleveland and Oakland. But any win in the NFL is impressive and two of the Broncos’ victories have come on the road. Denver absolutely dominated Cleveland and Oakland. The Broncos are playing fantastic defense and have allowed a league-low 16 points. The defense is much improved and it appears to be very physical. Offensively, new head coach Josh McDaniels has his system working. It is playing timely offense, fueled by a strong running game. The Broncos make few mistakes and are very prepared. It’s early, but Denver is clicking.

What’s ahead: We’re going to find out if Denver is a contender or a pretender in the coming weeks. Denver faces top teams in eight of its next 10 contests. It also plays at Philadelphia in Week 16. Denver's next five games are at home against Dallas and New England and on the road at San Diego, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Games against the New York Giants and Indianapolis also loom. I guess the 1972 Dolphins and 1985 Bears were busy. This is a tough stretch and the Broncos know it. But Denver is confident, well-prepared and McDaniels knows a lot about playing in pressure games. The team is healthy and it feels like it can navigate this stretch competitively.

Realistic outcome: It is very difficult to expect the Broncos to run through this schedule without difficulty. But early success gives Denver some breathing room. If Denver goes 5-5 in the next 10 games it will be 8-5 and probably in the playoff mix heading to the stretch run. Denver has to keep winning at home and steal a couple of road games. It has to take advantage of its two remaining games against Kansas City and its home game against Oakland. Denver can’t stumble in winnable games. If Denver can stay healthy, I think it can stay in the race. This doesn’t look like a team that will fall apart. I think it will only get better under McDaniels. Realistically, the Broncos can be a factor in the playoff race.

From our friend John Clayton:

Dallas Cowboys at Denver Broncos: Are the Broncos for real? Denver, the biggest surprise in football, is 3-0 under first-year coach Josh McDaniels. Denver's upset of the Bengals in Week 1 was a stunner, but the Browns and Raiders made the Broncos look elite on defense and solid on offense. This game is the first of eight major challenges for the Broncos against some of the best teams in football. Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan has pieced together a 3-4 defense with some castoff defensive linemen. He has patched the secondary with veterans.

The Cowboys won't have Felix Jones in the backfield because he's out with a PCL injury, and they aren't sure about Marion Barber, who missed the Monday night game versus Carolina with a quad injury.

From Matt Mosley:

The Cowboys are about to face one of the worst 3-0 teams (Denver Broncos) since the merger. After wins over Denver and Kansas City, Dallas will head into a bye with a nice-looking 4-1 record. But there are still some flaws that have emerged. A year removed from leading the league in sacks, the Cowboys were shut out the first two games. They had three sacks in the Monday night win over the Panthers, but two of them came after the game had already been decided.

The Cowboys won't win many games scoring 14 points on offense, although they pulled it off against Carolina. Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett seems to be realizing that this team has a new identity. In the post-T.O. era, the Cowboys' best chance for success is in a run-based offense. When Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice are all healthy, the Cowboys potentially have the most dangerous running attack in the league. Unfortunately, Jones and Barber appear to be injury prone at this point in their careers. This may sound crazy, but I think the Cowboys are actually the most underrated team in the division right now. Our power rankings specialists put them at No. 17, which seems ridiculously low.

If this team can find anyone to rush the quarterback opposite DeMarcus Ware (hello, Anthony Spencer?), the Cowboys could get on a roll.

I really hope McD and Nolan make sure Brian Dawkins sees crap like this. It made me angry so you can imagine the fire it would light under B-Dawk, who will in turn fire up the troops on Sunday.

We basically said the same thing but you're right. Someone has to let Dawk know about this!

that's a little rough.

This is going to be an interesting game on sunday. Cowboys are way overrated, and this is the type of game that Wade Phillips whiffs on regularly

That's too bad - don't want their fans using this an excuse when we trounce them.

I agree with Burger Bill... needed to put that in print so that I could mark it down for future reference.

5-5 over the next 10 wouldn't be a disappointment for me. Sure 7-3 sounds a lot better, but I'm a realist. 5-5 over the next 10 gives us 3 tries to get in the playoffs... 9-7 wins this division. Can't ask for anything more than that... Right Shanny?

Huh...

Minnesota...3-0...with wins vs Cleveland (0-3), Detroit (1-2) and SF (2-1)...

Indianapolis...3-0 w wins vs Jax (1-2), Miami (0-3) and Az (1-2)...

New Orleans...3-0 w wins vs Detroit (1-2), Philly (2-1) and Buffalo (1-2)...

NY Giants...3-0 w wins vs Washington (1-2), Dallas (2-1) and TB (0-3)...

Denver...with wins vs Cinci (2-1), Cleveland (0-3) and Oak (1-2)

So here I sit puzzled. Its not like the Broncos played division III teams for three weeks. The Giants, Saints, Colts, and Vikings either played the same teams, or played worse ones. Maybe I am too simple minded to understand the logic of saying Minnesota's 3-0 is superior's to Denvers...3-0 is 3-0, isnt it?

excellent points...

and don't forget Dallas's wins are over the 0-3 Panthers and 0-3 Bucs...

same with SD...they beat the 1-2 Raiders and 0-3 Dolphins...

but for some reason WE have something to prove...

wow thats just idiotic...

did we somehow just scrape by Oakland and Cleveleand or did we beat them each by 3 touchdowns?...

how much more would he have expected a "good" team to beat those teams by?...

Didn't a team start out 2-0 or 3-0 last year and end up 5-11 or something like that?

It will be interesting to see what happens with Ware. He wouldnt be the first big name pass rusher Clady has shut down. If that happens, it becomes interesting to see what happens to Dallas' defense.

Cincinnati also had a big road-grating offensive line and Denver's run defense held up pretty well against them statistically.

Matt Mosley is a former cowboy beat writer(for 7 years), lives in the area, and is a complete dallas homer. Now he is a respectable "unbiased" espn blogger.

Take it for what it is. He is incapable of being objective.

That being said, can anyone see Shefter saying something like this about a Broncos opponent? I can't.
