Default Joe Wilson Voted to Use Taxpayer Money on Illegal Immigrants' Health Care

Joe Wilson Voted To Provide Taxpayer Money For Illegal Immigrants' Healthcare

Open Congress:

On Wednesday night, Rep. Joe Wilson [R, SC-2], shouted "You lie!" at President Obama when he said that the healthcare bill would not cover illegal immigrants. "The supporters of the government takeover of healthcare and liberals who want to give healthcare to illegals are using my opposition as an excuse to distract from the critical questions being raised about this poorly conceived plan," Wilson said the next day in a campaign fundraising video.

However, in 2003, Wilson voted to provide federal funds for illegal immigrants' healthcare. The vote came on the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003, which contained Sec. 1011 authorizing $250 million annually between 2003 and 2008 for government reimbursements to hospitals who provide treatment for uninsured illegal immigrants. The program has been extended through 2009 and there is currently a bipartisan bill in Congress to make it permanent.

Why you think this is relevant is beyond me. What does his vote in 2003 prove? We'll get to that in a moment. Joe Wilson is on your radar screen because he openly (and tactlessly) challenged a single erroneous (at worst) and deliberately vague (at best) statement about a specific piece of legislation under consideration by Congress. His previous record of voting for insurance for illegal immigrants just doesn't detract from his objection to a false statement about THIS particular legislation.

Now, what his 03 vote and his objection to this particular bill having no safeguards against illegals having access say about Joe Wilson could be one or all of the following. One, maybe he's changed his mind on the issue of granting illegals access to taxpayer funded medical care. He would not be the first legislator to change position on a particular issue--see Specter, Arlen, Kerry, John, and even Obama, Barack.

Two, maybe the guy still wants illegals to get taxpayer funded health insurance, but his constituents are dead set against it. Doing his job, he represents his district by opposing something he himself favors. Good for him.

Three, maybe the guy's just a hypocrite who is grandstanding for purely political gain. In this case, it would put him in good company--Barack Obama and 98% of Congress. Political aspirations motivate the whole bunch of worm-ridden apples in Congress--always have, always will.

The REAL intersting thing about this Joe Wilson saga is that for all the brainless and lazy posts like this one, NONE have bothered to engage the issue raised by the guy, except to call it a lie while simultaneously changing the bill to 'fix' something they've declared unbroken the whole time. Sorry dude, I ain't a Republican or a Joe Wilson honk, but just someone who hates obfuscation and who finds this line of reasoning by you to be more useless cheerleading--exactly what this healthcare reform debate DOESN'T need.

Racist Wilson's outburst 'carefully calculated'

Link

Excerpt:

Rep. Hank Johnson is standing by his comments that Rep. Joe Wilson's "You lie!" outburst at Obama "instigated more racist sentiment" and could lead to a resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan. Johnson, a Georgia Democrat, says that he doesn't think that most of Obama's opponents are racists, but that he believes Wilson's comments "winked at a racist element" and that there is a small but "racially motivated fringe" among those who disapprove of the president and his policies. "Wilson is a canny politician," Johnson said. 'His outburst was a carefully calculated appeal to a particular constituency who question the legitimacy of Obama's presidency. The symbolism of his act, which violated the rules of the House and attacked the dignity of the president's office, emboldened and validated those who believe that Obama, despite having been lawfully elected, is an illegitimate occupant of the White House.

Um, no - that's not what it says.

Your comprehension game is scary, to be sure.

Pesciption drugs and Medicare are 2 different issues.

For better or worse, it was Bush's plan to give relief for exobitant prices on drugs that had not yet gone generic.

t the very least, Wison showed some compassion for illegals, more than I would have.

Democrats will use anything to pimp their race baiting garbage. It's been going on for 30+ years.

The way that bill reads...it appears as if it was passed to pay hospitials that had been depleted from a cash flow perspective serving illegals and those without insurance. Otherwise the Hospital would be in a situation where it could shutdown. Not really all that damning evidence. It still doesn't change the fact that Obama lied or was mistaken.

u posted it so do you believe he is a racist because he openly spoke out of the lie Obama was telling all of us? You can call him rude and I am ok with it as it is an opinion/fact, but another crazy calling anyone racist just because they dont agree with their politics is dangerous. Even Clinton and Obama dont think it is based on racism but politics which is correct. No need to hate the messenger when the message is the problem. BTW: I believe you are against Illegal aliens LABF so why would you bash the guy for standing up for your own principles? Maybe it is because he is a R and he challenged your love interest, Obama.
