Default What happened to Royal?

He hasnt really got on track yet like Im sure many were anticipating. Im surprised they havent gameplanned Royal more. Has anyone noticed defenses focusing more on Royal than Marshall? Because it seems like Marshall has seen more action than Royal to this point.

So far, Stokley has been the cornerstone of the WRs.

As it stands now only Stokley is on pace for over 1000 yards for us. I didn't see that happening.

And I surely didn't expect Gaffney to the leading receiver this game.

As Orton gets more comfortable I'm sure the catches will come for Royal.

In the meantime Stokely has been a nice safety blanket for Orton.

When he was in I saw Cleveland putting a safety to double team him. He will breakout soon.

So, Royal is getting shutout because Orton isnt ready yet? Thats an interesting take. Also, as I mentioned in another thread, its not like Orton scanned the field when he was with the Bears.

Orton was checking down great this game. I saw him sitting and checking down left and right. He actually looked comfortable in the pocket. I think Royal was just well covered, and Marshall wasn't on the field to pull coverage off him.

I don't know, just thinking/hoping that McDaniels opens the playbook a bit more and Eddie is Orton's first read more often.

I dont doubt Royal is being heavily marked. I alluded to this at the outset. But like you mention, Im kind of surprised theyre (ie the Broncos) not gameplanning Royal more to get the ball.

He is gettinng tight coverage mostly and he may also be having a sophomore slump..
He isn't getting separation much.

Maybe we are also playinng fairly good defenses.

Sharpe commented that while the fans were booing Orton he did not see any of the wide receivers getting open.

To me it doesn't look like Orton does a very good job of going thru progressions. I swear it looks like he locks onto a receiver and that's the only guy he's going to throw to no matter what.

I could be wrong and probably am. I'll rewatch it today, maybe I missed something in both games.

I posted this in another thread:

Quote:
Dont assume that Orton will start doing this. His tendency to lock onto guys isnt exactly driven by playing in a new system. Prior to this season, i accessed the Bears-Saints game from last year in the comcast menu and watched it in anticipation for the season. There was one point in the game where Collinsworth said that Orton doesnt look off guys and that he gets lost when doing so...and that this is a difference between he and Brees.

It made it seem like Orton really relies on pre-snap reads a lot because he's not comfortbale scanning for other WRs. This commentary was driven by observing him in an offense that he was very familar with.

80% completions in the 2nd half. Obvious miscommunications in the 1st half were addressed at halftime.

As for Royal he has taken some shots that he never really took last season. perhaps it is an adjustment he needs to make to this shorter passing game.

Royal is just like all of DEN's WR's right now, they are struggling with the reads in this scheme. The only one who is not lost is Stokely. More than once, Orton has looked to Royal and thrown the ball where he thought he would be only to see Royal run into double coverage.....

Sophomore slump - receivers are especially susceptible to it.

I think he does that sometimes and other times makes great reads. It's more obvious when he stares down a receiver but it's a mixed bag.

Orton isn't keying on just 1 guy. he is going to the open receiver and right now, Royal is getting most of the coverage directed his way. teams are game planning against him, more than anyone else on the team, and right now Stokley and Gaffney are the ones benefiting from that. also Marshall is still learning the system and isn't fully up to speed yet.

I love eddie royal but does it really matter who is leading the broncos in receptions as long as we win. eddie will be fine, some of the nonsense you guys discuss is unbelievable.

He's getting open every play and Orton's noodle arm just can't get it to him. Royal is quite pissed about it frankly. Hamrob saw it in his eyes!

As others have posted, Royal is probably going through a little slump. Add in the fact the BMarsh is not on the field, and that the cats out of the bag on Royal so he might draw double teams, and it probably makes sense that other WRs are getting the ball more than Royal.

I think once BMarsh gets in the groove, opponents will roll coverage that way. Royal will benefit greatly from this. Even though the guy is good, he is not a number 1.
