I was just thinking that this really highlights how terrible Slowik was...one off-season's worth of FA acquisitions and a new scheme, and this D is respectable again. Pretty incredible,

I think what's astounding is our defense hasn't worn down during these games, and today they held Cleveland scoreless for the final 3 quarters. 45 minutes of football. Classy.

Let's hope it lasts. I will kill myself if we start sliding like we always do.
Let's hope McD won't let that happen. |

Did anyone else notice Doom got his sack coming out of the 4-3 on the RT?

And its not like a lot of the new guys are all pro types. A lot of people apologizing for Slowik last year seemed to think thats what was needed to have a good defense. Its funny how a good DC that can scheme, can make players look better and one who cant, obviously makes them look worse. Last year, I maintained that the Slowik was so bad that it was difficult to know who was bad and how bad they are/were.

I think, statistically, Denver may end up better than average, depending on how things play out with Oakland and KC. But theyll basically be average by the end of the season, which would be a huge upgrade.

So I suppose all Shanny needed to do to keep his job was: FIRE Slowik and CUT 2/3 of our starters ... which was never going to happen!Good start to the season at 2-0! |

Can't wait to see us play Dallas. Stats aside, I love the toughness of this new D.

1- Bringing back Nate Webster from being out of football and then starting him in the middle. 2- Bringing in Winborn and playing him a lot 3- Bringing in Boss Bailey and starting him 4- Keeping Engleberger around for so long starting at Dend. 5- Neglecting the safety position, then manning it with McCree and Manual. 6- Trading for Robertson after he was washed up Those things would sink any D-coord and they are all Shannies fault. Those guys were his solution to the defense. Then defense got treated like the b team in Denver as Shanny spent all his focus on offense. Meanwhile the d coord was always left with a small crappy team. |

With teams like NE/Dal/Pitt/Eagles/Chargers 2 times etc we probably won't stay that high. But at least we are improved and not the laughing stocks people said we would be.

I doubt this will stay the course all season, but it is nice to see the Broncos stopping teams from going up and down the field all game long and not allowing big kickoff or punt returns either. McDaniels didn't just provide lip service like Shanahan when it came to improving the defense and special teams.

I am on the Nolan bandwagon! Dawkins is the man, it's still early, but our D is definitely better, and it's great to see Dumervil getting sacks-in the words of Adam Schein, we're "rollin' with Nolan"!

It is way to early to get excited about where we're at statistically compared to the rest of the NFL. The sample size is just too small to really get a great feel... but within the games there are a lot of individual areas that we do have a large enough sample to give us a good idea of what we will see in the future.
1. Good Tackling. Go back and watch DJ Williams yesterday. He wasn't in on a lot of tackles, but the ones he was in on featured 55 WRAPPING UP and making the sure tackles. I've not broken down the numbers, but if I had to guess I'd say we're down 75% in missed tackles from last year. Credit McD, Nolan, and the entire Defensive staff for focusing on tackling in the preseason. 2. Buckhalter has the best "burst" of any RB on this team. 3. McD still needs to figure out ways to integrate certain players on offense. Eddie Royal, Brandon Marshall, and Peyton Hillis to name a few. It was encouraging to see Hillis running on the goal line (and effective) as well as the end around to BMarsh. The first TD play to Scheff also suggests that McD is growing more comfortable with him which is a good sign as well. 4. Knowshon is will improve each game. He's still getting his game legs but what a weapon to have on this team. He needs to have 15 touches per game and I'm hoping that McD will make 4 or 5 of those in the passing game. The screen pass will be deadly with Knowshon, not that Buckhalter isn't great running it as well. 5. Pass rush, it is apparent that McD and Nolan are truly dedicated to getting pressure on the QB. So far we've seen Nolan willing to blitz if necessary and if somebody is getting it done with just 4 rushing (DOOOM) then he adjusts the coverages and we're that much stronger...... though we're still weak down the seam which needs to be corrected quickly. I shutter to think what good QBs would do to us down the middle... Brady, Roth, Rivers, Romo, etc. That's probably the biggest benefit of having cupcakes up front on our schedule. 6. We can stop the run. The Bengals are a good running offense. The Browns not so much so, but what I've seen so far, we can stop the run. The Faiders will be a great barometer next week and allow us to see how well we can cover the edges as the Faid will run both down the middle and try to hit the corners. Great test for this run D and I think they will be up to the challenge. Andra Davis especially looks dominant in this department. Love what I'm seeing for the most part with exception of the Seam Coverage and the use of our offensive personnel. I think this thing is still coming together and we are fortunate to have teams like Cincy and Clev. for our OJT. |

What I love about this D is when a QB goes bck to pass, there are times that he has a lot of time to throw, only to be sacked, as our backfield is covering so well. That is simply awesome!!
