Default Is the 4-3/3-4 hybrid defense dead already?

I don't recall seeing any 4-3 alignments today, and maybe only once or twice during the entire preseason.

Seeing as how our defense played extremely well today, is it safe to say that Mike Nolan is comfortable with our players running a true 3-4 and has abandoned his plans to run the hybrid?

Thoughts?

I think the hybrid talk was mostly due to the question marks with personnel. With Doom transitioning to LB extremely well, and other guys stepping up I think we'll see vastly more 3-4 than otherwise.

Of course it also could have been that they liked the way the 3-4 matched up better against the Bengals and that we'll see a reversal in the weeks ahead.

As Nolan has pointed out often, a 3-4 is usually a 4 man rush. We did a lot of that, as well as 5-2 alignments today. That being said, I was really happy with the d-line in general, in the base 3-4 until the last series.

I think they were able to get the players to run it.

It's not really a 3-4 with four stand-up linebackers ... one outside guy usually pushes the edge, sometimes starts with a hand on the ground.

the last series we just went into prevent mode and stopped attacking which made us look bad.

we started rushing 3 and dropping everyone else into coverage and with no pressure Palmer picked us apart.

I don't think we'll truly know until we're truly tested. I don't think we'll really know what we've got in a defense until the stretch that starts on October 4th, with Dallas, New England, and then @ San Diego.

Are you sure it was the 4-3 and not a nickel with 4 down linemen? I guess I could have missed it but I'm almost certain I never saw 4 linemen and 3 linebackers on the field.

I'd have to go back and look to be sure but I'm pretty sure.

its not a 5-2, its just a 3-4 with the OLB getting up on the LOS. A downlineman has his hand down. A lb doesn't.

Don't confuse a 5 man front with a 5 downlineman configuration.

Ah ok... I guess I saw 4 with hands down and 1 on the outside probably. But isn't that still a 4 down front?

Yes IMO if they have 4 guys with hands down, then they have 4 down lineman.

but usually it's backers standing up from what I saw. That way they can quickly drop back into coverage.

The good news is they didn't get pushed around all day like last yr.

Hypothetically, say we are get through those games 7-0 (4-0 before and 3-0 after) and we never once win pretty.

Just curious, will people still be complaining as loudly as they are now?
