US Girl Scouts prepare for war, pestilence

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States wants to enlist its 3.4 million Girl Scouts in the effort to combat hurricanes, pandemics, terror attacks and other disasters.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched a campaign Tuesday to entice the blue, brown and green-clad multitudes to be even more prepared, with the promise of a new patch if they pitch in.

The young scouts will be able to emblazon their sashes or vests with the patch if they undergo the training which readies them for an emergency.

"This new preparedness patch will increase citizen preparedness and enhance our country's readiness for disasters," said DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano in a statement.

"As a former Girl Scout, I know the 'Be Prepared' motto well, and I look forward to working with the Girl Scouts to spread the preparedness message to all of our nation's citizens."

The move is part of a month-long government effort to make Americans better able to cope with natural and man-made disasters.

What exactly are they expecting 10 year old girls to do? No Cub Scouts or Boy scouts included?

Preparation is always good -- although I no longer trust the government much.

Its a shame that we even have to keep an eye on what message and agenda is being shared by Big Brother to our children -- in this case, I am assuming it is a good one.

It's so they will follow government orders rather then their own moms and dads.

Too big a leap -- I think there are some who have this end game in view... but sometimes an ink blotch is just an ink blotch...

I agree with the dangers of incrimental destruction of Liberty -- but if this is how you feel, (that government is wanting to undermine parents) then when an R gets elected conservatives like us need to make a stink about whne they cross the line. Its too one sided (on both sides) and how can anyone trust each other when we both turn a blind eye to cooruption with the club that most closely alligns with us -- Conservatives need to clean house first -- the Dems helped, but McCain loosing and R's loosing was in part about the R's having lost touch with small government principles (long, long ago.)
