Default What's up with "petulance"?

It's like every sports caster and message board poster has to use this word now. I hear it about four times a week, and it is quickly becoming the new "classy" of the sports world.

Why do we latch onto these words? Do they make us sound smart? Marshall is a petulant child. Cutler is a petulant child. TO is a petulant child. Great, find another word, this one is driving me bat**** nuts.

I don't notice that at all.

And it's the perfect adjective to describe how Marshall is acting.

I used it once or twice to describe Cutler, and a bunch of the media types just latched on to it.

Sorry...

So as for your condescending "100 post rule" that people like you spout, is it because if people don't post here they must not have any idea of how to post on a message board? I mean, it's not like I haven't spent years at other message boards before I came here, but I guess the Orange Mane is special in how those who have posted 100 times are smarter than everyone else. That makes a lot of sense.

I'll be honest--I've only seen this whining pissy complaint on sporting websites. Are you an ex-jock? I'm just trying to get an idea for the type of people who like to use the word "petulant" a hundred times a post, and then complain about the 100 post rule.

Look through the 13 page thread on Marshall's video, then look at the front page of the Denver Post, and then look at ESPN and SI's commentary. They all have it.

And perfect adjective? Sorry, adjectives are for 8th graders trying to pass the CSAP. Real writers don't use them. They bog down the writing and become distracting. Especially when a word goes into heavy circulation like this.

Typically the 100 post line is used as a kind of catchall for when someone new to the board starts a ****ty thread, a ****ty annoying thread, or a ****ty annoying awful thread.

Seriously, complaining about word usage on the internets?

He is being petulant. Sorry.

Ya WA, I should have gone with my first inclination and complained about it over a round of beers at the strip club tonight. But strippers, as you probably know, are horrible adjective abusers. So yeah. What kind of pissy catch phrase can I use for when people who have been around awhile start annoying ass threads?

And I'm not new around here. I dropped my other account.

I supplied the thesaurus link, the thread has served the OP's purpose (He's so witty!).

Petulant. Boom, one word--DONE.

EDIT-I would call him "disgruntled"....

I'm confused about your pronoun usage. Him = Marshall or me? Either way, disgruntled if you must use an adjective is much better. Not so flashy and trying to draw attention to yourself.

Marshall and Cutler were disgruntled. I'd also use the words "awesomely defiant" or "bad ass rebels" to describe them standing up to a suddenly idiotic front office.

Are you upset that people are using a word too big for your 3rd grade vocabulary? You come across very defensive. Are you angry at yourself for your lack of intelligence?

haha really? Last time I checked "real writers" use adjectives as they were intended, to describe things. Petulance just happens to be a wonderfully accurate description of the current situation.

Just because you're pissy that it's being used more than usual doesn't make it any less appropriate.

Thank you for your concern though, the grammar police will almost CERTAINLY be knocking on your door with a shiny new badge!

I also suggest everyone ignore this asshat. He is a past member here. Went by the name Casino Royal. He had been gone for a while but like a cold sore on a hooker he just won't go away.

Actually went by SimonSteele--don't know who you are though. You seem like a bitter person, someone who must fight with those around him. My bitterness stems from dealing with people like you, and I suppose there are a number of faceless internet names I could attach your identity to as well, people who have bothered me over the years much in the way you do now. I could assume you are alts of all these people, because there could never be more than one boy out there who disagreed with me right?

But nonetheless, I am arguing writing with a group who seems to know nothing about writing.

Take a writing class. Actually that might be too much work. Take a lit class. Read something by Hemingway or Cormac McCarthy or Tim O'brien or John Steinbeck and tell me how many 10 dollar adjectives they use in their writing. Of course, what do they know about writing anyway?

I suppose arguing a point of contention on a message board doesn't make sense when it deviates from the norm. I should have seen that in how people reacted to players not towing the company line.

My Grandma always says I'm a great writer, and she was a teacher!

Literature=literature

Sports=not literature

Sorry.

I mean, if you want to read Woody Paige or Mark Kizsla, that's great. Just give me the news/stats/etc.

That's the problem with teaching writing these days--I deal with it on a daily basis. Just because we could never live up to literary geniuses doesn't mean we shouldn't learn something from them. They are, after all, the best. And good sports writing, which is exactly what this is concerning, doesn't need the use of adjectives and adverbs in abundance.

I'm a writing teacher as well, but I don't think I'll evaluate your writing.

There's a difference though between "sports writing" and the news-print stuff you get on ESPN or rotoworld.

Seriously dude, making blanket statements about serious writers is just plain retarded. ALL WRITERS use adjectives, because essentially, that's what writing is. A DESCRIPTION of some sort. Just because you don't deem certain portions of our language worthwhile, doesn't mean anyone else in the writing world agrees with you.

Steinbeck - The Pearl, page 85...."and the baby was weary and petulant, and Juana gave him her breast"

McCarthy - Suttree, page 410..."she raised her foot, a huge petulant child, and kicked the rearview mirror askew"

Hemingway - in his PERSONAL LETTERS IN RESPONSE TO FAULKNER CRITICISM, uses petulant 3 times in one short excerpt.

run along and troll somewhere else please
