Broncos plan to pursue "escalating discipline" of Marshall
Posted by Mike Florio on August 28, 2009 1:43 PM ET
Broncos coach Josh McDaniels, who came off as even younger than his 33 years while nervously working his way through the early moments of a press conference filled with fidgets and "you knows," explained that the suspension of receiver Brandon Marshall is part of a plan to impose an "escalating discipline schedule" against Marshall, unless and until he falls in line.

"You know, the league and -- and -- and our organization were trying to follow, you know, an escalating discipline schedule," McDaniels said, touching his hat and head more than a third-base coach. "You know, you don't -- you don't just come out, you know, and -- and -- and throw the most, you know, significant discipline you can at a player." (In fairness, McDaniels seemed to calm down a bit as the press conference developed.)

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the first suspension for Marshall will expire on September 6.

McDaniels said Marshall was given a warning on Wednesday, and that "a number of events" led to the suspension. It's unclear whether the warning came before or after Marshall's antics during Wednesday practices, video of which took the league by storm when it showed up last night on TheDenverChannel.com.

Given that Marshall referred to a "meeting" that preceded his practice-field pouting, it looks like he received the warning during that meeting, and that his reaction prompted the suspension.

"When he's here, if we're working together and working towards helping this team win, then we'll work him in," McDaniels said regarding the possibility that Marshall will play during Week One at Cincinnati. "If that's not the case, then that's not the case. We have good receivers here. We have good receivers here with him, or without him. And that's the truth."

He should have just made the raspberry sound at that point, and then walked away from the podium.

McDaniels is likely way too young to get that reference, which likely means that he might also be too young to be an NFL head coach.

I can't stand listening to someone say "you know". If I knew, why would I be talking to you? It's usually the sign of poor grammer habits. There are plenty of them out there. I've got them.

All of a sudden, irregardless of the truth, it was a whole nother situation.

People do it all the time, but when transcribing quotes, people usually remove "you know"s and "um"s and repetitions. Florio is showing his colours a little bit much.

Oh the irony of someone complaining about grammar habits and not only misspelling the word but then using "irregardless" in the same post. (oh, btw, garcia, this isn't a dig at you...I just thought it was funny)

It was meant to be funny. The whole sentence is bad in each piece.

I got it but having to explain it to someone else is as annoying as saying "you know", you know?

the guy has no experience talking to the press. in NE it was only Belichick that was allowed to speak. and now McDaniels is learning on the fly. he is getting better with the press conferences though.

It's not easy doing public speaking. He will get better. I just can't believe the hate for the coach. He's out there every day working his ass off to try and win football games. This kid is hungry and if you watched pats last 2 yrs you know he's a great play caller.

He will be at his best on sundays talking right to the qbs. Not letting some other guy do it because hes burnt out and can't take the pressure anymore.

Who cares hes young and doesn't yet know how to be bill parcells at a press conference.

The fans on this board are really starting to be a bunch of trolls.

What's worse is when you know that it's horrible grammar and your hear yourself saying it. I once pulled out irregardless while talking to the Dean of my Grad School. I heard it and had to ask him if I just said "irregardless" to him. I wanted to stab myself in the leg with my pencil.

Love me some George Carlin and if you've listened to him ,his whole act usually about language.

"Get on the plane, get on the plane. I say, **** YOU! I'm getting IN the plane! Evel Knievel can get ON the plane. There seems to be less wind in here!"

"“No comment” is a comment."

"Whose cruel idea was it for the word “Lisp” to have an “s” in it?"
