Default In Good sign, Job Losses Slow as Unemployment Dips

Slowly coming around it seems...

================================================== =====
In good sign, job losses slow as unemployment dips
By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer Jeannine Aversa, Ap Economics Writer – 6 mins ago

WASHINGTON – Employers sharply scaled back layoffs in July, and the unemployment rate dipped for the first time in 15 months, sending a strong signal that the worst recession since World War II is finally ending.

A net total of 247,000 jobs were lost last month, the fewest in a year. That compares with 443,000 jobs that disappeared in June. And the unemployment rate for July declined to 9.4 percent from 9.5 percent in June.

The snapshot the Labor Department released Friday offered other encouraging news, too: Workers' hours nudged up after sinking to a record low in June, and paychecks grew after having stagnated or fallen.

"There's clearly been a turn for the better," said economist Ken Mayland, president of ClearView Economics. "The worst is behind us in terms of layoffs."

I question the validity of these statistics. It's good the metrics there are using have dipped, but I question what the number actually reflects.

I was certain somebody would post this without bothering to critically think about what it is they've read. Garcia's on to something and here's why.

In June, the civilian workforce was 154,926,000 Americans, per the Bureau Of Labor Statistics. In July, 796,000 of those were taken out of BLS definition of labor force due to them having stopped looking for work or, and I found this odd, 'because they believe no jobs are available for them.'

So BLS basically hacked away 1/2 of 1% of the workforce that existed in June, calculated a net loss of jobs in July of 247,000 and, voila, you have the unemployment rate fall .1%. Bush did the same in 2003--it's called manipulation of data, and it's cheesy.

This is the only way an unemployment rate can actually FALL when you have a net loss of jobs.

The numbers are calculated the way they have been for years, do you want that to change now that Bush isn't president?

If it was wrong then it's still wrong. What difference does it make?

Its "good" anytime the number goes down --- if it goes down a few months in a row, then we might be seeing a trend. One would expect some pop considering how much we have spent -- but Newsweek's "The recession is over" take is propiganda. Personally, like previously stated, I expect an uptick at some point, but dont think it will be long lived, we are simply too far in debt to have a real turn around without cutting expenses accross the board.

The difference is it wasn't wrong then to you or any other right winger here when the Bush cartel was in power. At least you never said so then.

OK, that's fine but I don't remember anyone on the right agreeing with these points being brought up many times in years past.

What percentage of that number found employment, what percentage of that number are people not looking for work and so on.

Unforunately we all have short memories -- The left often spoke of the horrible economy, when unemployment was about 1/2 what it is now...

But I agree with the basic notion -- that the right in general speaks for Liberties when a D is in charge, and said little or nothing under Bush. It shows again how dangerous alligence to party over principle is.

Still, some Fed officials think the jobless rate could rise as high as 10.6 percent by next year. The post-World War II high was 10.8 percent at the end of 1982.

Paying attention you would know that fair use laws have some impact on this site now (according to the owner) and posting more than a few paragraphs can violate those laws. Also, if you noticed, almost all of my posts here over the last 6 years have adhered to those laws. It's an ownership thing.
