Default Drop in crime coincides with exodus of illegal immigrants

http://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/s...7/daily89.html

The comments section has some good counter points

A marked drop in Phoenix-area crime coincides with the recession and a drop in the number of illegal immigrants in Arizona.

Phoenix has seen a 25 percent decline in the number of crimes during the first five months of 2009 compared to the same time period in 2007 when the economy began to slow. Violent crime in Phoenix is down 12 percent, according crime statistics from the Phoenix Police Department.

The Mesa Police Department reports a 19 percent decrease in total crimes for the first half of 2009 versus the first half of 2007, including a 10 percent drop in violent crime. Tempe has seen a 25 percent total drop.

At the same time, the state’s illegal immigrant population has decreased by as much as one-third thanks to the down U.S. economy, tougher enforcement polices by the federal government and Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the state’s employer sanctions law which goes after businesses who hire undocumented workers, said Steven Camarota, director of the Center for Immigration Studies.

CIS estimates Arizona’s illegal immigrant population has gone from 579,000 in 2007 to 388,000 this year — 191,000-person drop.

Camarota said enforcement was the initial reason for the drop in illegal immigration in Arizona, but now it’s more due to the lack of jobs for migrants entering the U.S. from Mexico.

Arizona has lost 239,500 — 9 percent of its work force — since the recession began in late 2007, according the Economic Policy Institute. Those job losses have been heavy in industries such as construction, restaurants and services.

CIS estimates the U.S. illegal immigrant population has dropped from 12.5 million in 2007 to 10.8 million now.

Interesting because crime usually goes up in tough times.

The goal of the country should be the removal of every single illegal citizen.

Then start a manageable work visa program to fill the labor.

Good!!! ...and good ridance. I just read another whiner piece in the denver post about families being torn apart due to deportation. Who gives a ****. Families also get torn apart when american citizens are incarcerated for breaking the law. These illegals knew they were breaking the law, and now want a shoulder to cry on when the law catches up with them. Too ****ing bad. They should have either not broken the law, or considered the possibility of eventually being caught.

Adios muchacho!

Why was 2007 used and not 2008 for comparison? Probably for effect since there was such a huge drop in crime in 2008.

And mine is 2008 percentages wouldn't have been a very impressive comparison. The effect (25% number) would have been reduced substantially.

Oh, I thought the rate went down because of all of Obama's tough measures to reduce crime. Oh wait, that'll be the belief by his supporters in a year or two if the numbers stay about the same.

Pointing out illegals leaving and crime rate decreasing is racist according to most liberals. Doesn't matter if any truth to it either.

I like how the article is presented to suggest as if coincides now means causal effect. Crime is down everywhere since 1994, when all immigration was booming, but lets not stop peoples prejudices with the facts and specious arguments. From the US Bureau of Justice Statistics:

Since 1994 violent crime rates have declined, reaching the lowest level ever in 2005.

Property crime rates continued to decline

And as for Center for Immigration Studies, it was started by racist and nativist John Tanton. From the Southern Poverty Law Center:

Quote:
.... Although it goes unmentioned on its website and in its other materials, CIS was born in 1985 as a program of FAIR [Federation for American Immigration Reform], which had been run by Tanton since he started it in 1979. Even then, Tanton understood that CIS would soon need to stand on its own in order to be seen as the "independent, non-partisan" organization that its mission statement claims today. In a letter to Cordelia Scaife May, a far-right philanthropist who supported many of Tanton's nativist endeavors, Tanton was candid.

"For credibility," he told the woman whose foundation would go on to support CIS for decades, "this will need to be independent of FAIR, though the Center for Immigration Studies, as we're calling it, is starting off as a project of FAIR."....

I heard that if you have have half a tank of gas that you cannot go to as many places as if you have a full tank of gas. That does not makes sense. It's the same car and I have the same driver's license. I want to go to the same places. Why can't I get the same results with less gas?

1) coast into stop signs and red lights
2) make sure you tires are properly inflated
3) wax your car weekly to limit the drag coefficient

and most importantly:

4) LOSE THE FAT CHICKS.

GOOD LUCK QUIET. On your salary--the 4th one may be hard to do.......

The Phoenix area population actually increased from 2007 to 2008 (the first full year of the Bush economy failure) and crime decreased by over 10%.

That's what I do. I have a stick shift, and so when I see the light is
red up ahead or I am going downhill I take it out of gear and coast.
The tachometer drops to idle speed so I figure if the engine is running
slower I am using less gas.

I always found the abortion theory quite interesting there. If abortions are more common to the poor and the poor commit more crimes... what happens when the poor are aborted? Less crimes. ~20 years after Roe v. Wade would be when that came to fruition. Makes sense to me.

Maybe Roe v. Wade had something to do with it, but poverty levels and demographics have fluctuated (notice the Reagan-Bush period) since then and according to the most recent data, it is now just above 1973 levels, %-wise, yet crime still fell during that period to today.

What I find interesting if access to abortion by poor people did have an impact in reducing crime would conservatives head explode in attempting to reconcile their law and order stance with their pro-life support. Throw in federal funds to facilitate the access, and I envision a complete meltdown.
