Default Mike Nolan interview

Highlights of Mike Nolan’s first interview
August 3rd, 2009, 10:19 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Frank Schwab
New defensive coordinator Mike Nolan met with the media for the first time since being hired this winter. He touched on a lot of different subjects, and here are some of his comments:
On the players’ progress picking up his scheme: “It’s a new scheme and we have some players playing new positions. You’d always like to be further along than you are at this time, and in a year from now they will be further, but they have a lot to learn.”
On first-round pick Robert Ayers and how much he missed during his holdout: “I don’t think he’s that far behind. He’ll pick it up. He’s a bright guy, and he’s familiar with it.”
On the defensive line: “Reality is, we don’t have a lot of starting experience, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have players. … I look for the guys to perform. Our preseason games will be important to all those guys.”
On why he prefers the 3-4 scheme: “I think it’s got versatility. You can go from a 3-4 to a 4-3 in one play, and if you have injury or you have to game adjust, it’s easy to do. … A 3-4 adapts to a 4-3 very well. It’s very difficult to make a 4-3 go the other way because now you’re talking about a 300-pound guy trying to drop into coverage.”
On the outside linebackers who are switching from defensive line: “All the guys we have doing it are capable. I’m not worried about it. If we were we’d move them back to putting their hand in the dirt, which would make them a defensive linemen. So we’ve got them in the right places.”
On the secondary: “That’s a good group of guys. I would hope their experience would rub off on some of the other guys too.”
On head coach Josh McDaniels: “He’s got good confidence in front of the team, he’s got good command presence in front of the team, obviously he comes from very good mentors. I think he’s doing an outstanding job with the football team.”
On McDaniels hiring him to run the defense: “Hiring me he had a vision, he wanted it to look like something, and hopefully we’re giving him that vision. We are, and it starts with the scheme.”
On the strengths of the 3-4 scheme: “A 3-4, one of the things that gives an offense problems is the fourth rusher can come from anywhere. Typically in football on defense you rush four guys, that’s a straight up rush. If you rush less than that it’s called a prevent, if you rush more than that they call it a blitz. In a 3-4, that fourth guy, they don’t know where he’s coming from. So that’s nice from a defensive standpoint because the defense has to be on its toes. In a 4-3 you’ve already said who they are: the four defensive linemen are going to come.”
On being out of coaching late last season after being fired by San Francisco: “Sunday is a hard day when you’re not coaching. The week, you can get by, but Sundays are hard. The weeks when I was watching games, it wasn’t easy.”
On his impressions of the Broncos defense last season: “They were having a difficult time. That’s about all I’ll really say about it. It was difficult. And I wasn’t on the inside to say why it was difficult.”
On going back to San Francisco for a preseason game against the 49ers Aug. 14: “It’ll be different. A couple of my children still live out there, so I’m looking forward to that. … If there’s anything I miss (about the 49ers), it’s the relationships with people.”

I'm VERY glad Nolan is here to run the defense and take pressure off McDonalds.

Terrific interview. Thanks.

I was wondering when we were going to hear from Nolan. I was glad when they
hired him, and this interview certainly doesn't disappoint. I believe they're going
to surprise a lot of people this year . . .

If they can get anything out of Crowder it will be a testament to how pathetic Slowik and his stooges were

So far the reports from camp have been promising

"In front of the team" ... he has good confidence.

In the balckground he's saying, "HOLY EFFING **** ... WE HAVE NO DL-MEN OR A QB ... What?!"

Nolan chuckles in the back, because he wants to take over this mess in two years.

That's why its critical for the OLBS that they learn to cover. If people know they can't cover, the other team knows they're coming and that advantage is lost.

Looks like Crowder is showing some nice cover skills so far, but I haven't heard much about Elvis in that respect. If he can't show reasonable cover skills then he may well find himself relegated to 3rd-down specialist duty like some are suggesting he will be.
