Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson died Tuesday afternoon, the Eagles announced.
Johnson was 68 and had been on a leave of absence from the team to undergo cancer treatments. He was regarded as one of the NFL's top defensive minds during 22 years as an assistant coach and joined the staff of Eagles Coach Andy Reid in January 1999. Opponents were befuddled by his creative blitz packages, and his players praised his straightforward approach. But his health deteriorated in recent months and he was relegated to coaching from a motorized cart. The Eagles announced in the offseason that he was taking a leave of absence and named secondary coach Sean McDermott their interim defensive coordinator. The interim tag was removed from McDermott's title just before training camp opened. According to the Eagles, Johnson is survived by his wife Vicky, two children and four grandchildren. |

Bummer.
He was the reason the Eagles defense was always so good. What a huge blow for the organization and the Johnson family. |

Going to the actual website is also a good place for confirmation :p
http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/index2.html I think the saddest thing of all is that Brett Favre is the front page of www.nfl.com and JJ is simply on the side in a small picture. |

His replacement, Sean McDermott, is a guy the Broncos were rumored to have been interested in at DC during the coaching search. He'll do a good job but losing Dawkins probably isn't ideal for them as his experience would have helped.

it is easy to overstate someones impact when they pass. but I and most people who frequent this board understand how talented and consistent JJ was. The NFL has lost a great and there should be a special wing in the HOF for people like him

Jim Johnson was a fantastic DC. One of the best and Brightest DC's in the NFL for many years. The great DC's are thinning out in the NFL. First Kiffin leaves Tampa, Now Johnson dies. I seriously hope the rule of three stays away from Dick Lebeau...
