I am surprised Americans are not mentioned. Most of the things mentioned here applies to Americans as well.

Most Americans can speak only one language and don't bother to even pick up rudimentary knowledge of the local language when traveling abroad.

Also, many have little respect for local customs.

I remember visiting Colombo in Sri Lanka. Witnessed a loud rude American group of 10 walk in to a traditional local restaurant. And order Hamburgers!! And then sound so irritated and surprised that Hamburgers aren't on the menu, ask rudely and loudly that what kind of restaurant doesn't serve Hamburgers, make racist comments about the local cuisine and storm out in a huff.

Dammit, if you only want to eat Hamburgers, stay at home!! Don't embarrass other Americans who actually like to experience local cultures while traveling.

I find Japanese and Europeans tourists the most sophisticated international travellers.

I seem to recall there was a company that sold Canadian flags and stuff to American tourists so people wouldn't give them ****. I know from my own experience that in certain places, people would be cold towards me until I let it slip that I'm Canadian. I really couldn't say if Americans really are bad tourists, but I know that perception, true or false, is out there.

It takes only a few bad apples (like the ones I mentioned in my earlier post) to spoil it for everyone else....

People all over the world like to generalize...

If I go to Russia, I am not going to demand they speak English and bring on the hamburgers...besides...Hamburgers are a classically American food, so why go overseas and order the same stuff? Gonna eat whatever the locals eat and try to be mindful of their cultures and traditions. Thats just common sense.

I think a lot of Americans these days are much more savvy travelers than you give them credit for here. Most of the people I know who travel are truly interested in experiencing a foreign culture, not in lording around like the stereotypical US tourist. Think of all the young Americans who are traveling these days during and after college.

Actuslly, the most arrogant are young Muslims, out of their controlled societies.

They go for it all. Strong tips, no tips, ho's, opium,

These kids have so much money, they are never in danger.

Oil money.

Of course a lot of Americans are very travel savvy and receptive to local cultures.

But if people have one or two bad experiences with a certain nationality of tourist, they tend to generalize.

Guess the best policy is to represent yourself in the best possible light wherever in the world you are. That's the only thing under your control.

Interesting.... then how are you able to tell whether they are bogus or not?

On another note, are you familiar with selective belief?
